A Couple Repair Questions

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have a 2002 Suburban LS. A couple things that need to be addressed. First, the liftgate won't stay up all of a sudden so I guess it is time to replace a strut. Do both need to be replaced at the same time? Also, what is the part number for them and where is the best place to buy it from?

Another problem is the high mount brake lamp doesn't light up. What kind of bulb does it take and how do you remove? (I haven't taken a look yet so sorry if it is very obvious)

Thanks.

Lift strut. Normally sold in pairs.

Bulb: Just take out.

As far as I can see it is not a bulb but a whole unit. I called up my dealer and they quoted me $187 for a replacement unit.

Check the CHMSL circuit first because its not the same as the rear brake light system.

I am guessing that mean High Mount Stop Lamp? I looked at fuses but never saw that one. I'll take a look at it again.

Ok, I replaced the fuse for CHMSL and it didn't do anything. Is the next step replacing the lamp? How likely is it for this LED lamp to burn out?

put it to you this way, my mom's 1994 GMC Safari had an LED CHMSL (Third Brake Light) and after 14 years, that is about the only thing we have not replaced and all of those LEDs still light up.

Yeah, It's very unlikely that ALL the LEDs on the strip would burn out at the same time. Maybe a bad connection, a crack or cold solder joint on the circuit board they're mounted on. I'd try to track it down further before paying $187 for a new one. Heck, I'd do without it before I'd pay that! (ouch!)

It IS your 3rd brake lamp assembly that is the problem. Must replace the whole thing-it is held in place with 2 phillips-head screws.

Go to your local junkyard and haggle...get a much better price that way...

Thanks. Strange thing is that both advance and autozone have the high mount lamp in their system as being replaceable with a 194 bulb.
