07 Nbs Mirror Caps

Recommended Posts

I have my truck at the body shop getting the door handles painted and the plastic below the chrome bumper. I would like to get the caps on top of the mirror painted but the body shop does not know how to remove them. Did any one remove them and how did they do it?

They just snap off. The easiest way to get them off I have found is to fold the mirror and pop it loose from the side nearest to the mount with a small screwdriver or panel popper and gently unsnap the rest of the cover. Be careful. The plastic is brittle. Don't do it in cold weather... or at least heat them up with a heat gun on low to make the plastic more flexible.

EDIT: If you do break one of the clips made into the cover it will still snap on. Just be careful not to break several.

How much to get that done?? i wanted to get mine painted white to match but was scared at what it would cost!!!!

I got a estimate to paint the door handles, mirror caps, body side molding, and the plastic under the bumper. That includes taking the parts off then installing and paint and materials $250.00

Thanks Jim for the information. I'll let the shop know.

BTW if you do break a tab you can put them on as good as new with PVC cement it welds them back together. you only need a drop or so.

Dont use any other glue like instant glue or epoxy they just dont bond the parts like the PVC

Let me know how the paint comes out. I was thinking of painting my complete mirrors red but I didn't know how the texture would look painted.

THANKS

Get the Putco covers, like mine, then paint those red. They are smooth and that way you can always take them off to repaint them when they get knicked up. Just an idea.

OK Jim,

The body shop that I took it to is going to build the rough surface up with sandable primer, so it should be smooth when it is done.

Please post a picture when it is all done, this is something I would like to do. My goal would be to get rid of all the black plastic.

Thanks Jeff. I've considered just getting the uppers in chrome... I do have the chrome gene. I just don't want to go too far.

I hear ya!! Amount of chrome is dependant on truck color IMO. Black trucks need some chrome, but not door handles, gas covers, bug shields, etc. i.e. I would NEVER have put a chrome bug shield on my truck if I had bought another black truck. Red, White and Gray look great with a little more chrome though. I am not a fan of the chrome door handles on the OBS (with surround), but on the new trucks I think they look ok, especially on your truck, they look more like the ones that were actual chromed steel from the 70's.

I bought the GM complete replacement handles. I wanted red but they don't come in red. I just hated the textured black that came on the truck. Chrome can look a little...er ...uh ethnic if you aren't careful. If you know what I mean. Not knocking anybody's taste but I want it to look nice but not like it fell in a bin full of sticky chrome bits.

Agreed, I sometimes wonder if mine has too much. I still laugh whenever I see a chrome or billet gas access cover. WTF? Reminds of the fad 20 years ago with the neon colored double-bladed wipers.
