"relearn Tire Position" Help..

The deal...

 

The day before thanksgiving i got my oil change at a local mechanic, without my permission they rotated my tired. lucky not across just front to back witch i could not understand since there was only 3000 miles on the brand new tires.. my previous truck (92 f-150) i never rotated the tires. well anyways after the mechanic was threw i told him rotating the tires probably threw off the tire pressure sensors and the tire position system, in fact it did. after reading over the owner manual it gave us step by step instructions on how to fix this problem.

 

1. apply parking break.

2. turn key in on position. (not turning on engine)

3. press down cluster reset button. ( the thingy u press to rest trip milage)

4 within 2 mins. release or add air pressure to the driver side front tire.. within 30 seconds the horn will sound.

5. repeat step 4 to front right back right and back left tires.. after completing the back left tire the horn will sound 2 times to inform you the "relearn tire position" process has been completed..

 

 

after trying these steps several times, the mechanic an I were only able to get front left tire to sound and the front right tire to sound..

 

we tried both releasing and increasing the pressure..

NO i do not have the DIC upgrade and will be getting it soon..

when the truck is started, the tire pressure light is blinking then stays solid. with " relearn tire position" in the DIC.

the tires are filled at 36 PSI so im not to sure why the tire pressure light is even on...

 

any ideas?

my truck is a 07 NBS sierra 1500 SL package.

 

hopefully i can solve this problem without going to the dealership with yalls help..

Yes, many of us have the same issue. So you're not alone, nor should you feel stupid for being unable to get this seemingly simple task done.

 

The dealership has this magic little wand/device that somehow remotely resets each tire just by placing it near the tire and pressing some button. It take them all of 5 minutes tops to do it, and I highly recommend just going to the GMC/Chevy dealership and letting them reset it as opposed to trying to do it yourself and spending 30 minutes or 3 trips to 3 different gas stations trying to solve it, and then possibly wanting to put 10mm hollowpoint rounds into your tires from the frustration.

cool cool, i as just fearing the 4 hour wait.. for a 5 mins job... but seems like this may be the easiest way to fix this problem... thhanks for the input...

This is why you get on a first name basis with one of the head mechanics. Bring 'em pizza, do something nice for them, and they'll help you out when you need a quick task done then and there.

Is it possible to remove the light bulb behind the instrument panel? With all these people having problems with these sensors, I'm not looking forward in rotating my tires.

I just did mine. It worked fine.

 

I think where a lot of people have problems is with the volume of air needed to get a response. When I did it, I started having doubts as it seemed like forever before the horn beeped. I was going to give up thinking I was letting all the air out but I kept going. It turned out, after checking with a gauge, each tire only dropped 3-4 lbs to get a beep.

 

Start with 40 psi in all four tires. Use a tool such as a suitably sized roll pin punch to get max flow while bleeding the air out. A finishing nail with a 1/8" head would also suffice (don't use the pointy end in the valve). Once you start, don't stop. It might take 20 seconds of bleeding to get a beep. Left front, right front, right rear, left rear.

 

Give it another try.

I just rotated my tires today. 6400 miles 07 NBS LT2 ECSB 2WD VMAX Silverado. After rotating, I just started driving without doing the reset of the TPMS. The TPMS worked fine, no warning lights or problems. I just got back from a 20 mile highway trip and I checked the tire pressures about every 5 miles and watched the pressures rise with the trip. Before I parked I stopped and hit the relearn button it honked twice, I put it in gear and drove around the block. Checked pressures and it still works fine. Go figure.

The tire pressures will read correctly for each tire wherever it is on the vehicle now. Except after rotation it will not show the pressure for the right position on the vehicle. Let some air out of one tire and the lowered pressure will display the position inacurately.

My 2008 owners manual states "Activate the TPMS sensor by increasing or decreasing the tire's air pressure for five seconds, or until the horn chirp sounds." It took 10-15 seconds each tire to get the chirp.

OK first thing in the mourning I am going to try the 5 sec technique and if that doesn`t work I will do the let out the air until it beeps technique. I have a air compressor so it is not that big of a deal for me. My first attempt tonight did not have consistent results. I will post results

That's what the manual for my 2007 Suburban says, too.

 

The way I read that, though, is basically to add or remove air for five seconds or until the horn chirp sounds, whichever comes first. Seems to me that GM could have worded it better to avoid any confusion.

 

Anyway, letting out air for five seconds maximum has always worked for me. Sometimes the horn chirps after a couple of seconds, and I'll stop letting out air. Sometimes I'll stop letting out air after five seconds and the horn will chirp fifteen seconds later.

 

Anyway, if people are having trouble, can't hurt to try it both ways.

 

EDIT: Now that I think about, if GM wanted us to let out air until the horn chirps, then that's what they would have said. Why mention anything about five seconds at all? Compare the statement in the manual with this one: "Activate the TPMS sensor by increasing or decreasing the tire's air pressure for five seconds, or until the horn chirp sounds." See the difference?
