Hp Vs Regearing

This is a spin off of my thread yesterday about towing with 3.42 gears. I started thinking I wonder if adding more HP would give the same result as regearing. If regearing is going to cost $1500 I could maybe spend that on gaining HP rather than gears. Let me know your thoughts?

Adding HP could help, but the engine will still not be reving in its sweet spot. The regearing will be the best option. The only thing that would add enough ponies would be forced induction. If you go that route, your gonna spend 3x as much vs the gearing.

I will agree with John and add that it is not only additinon ponies you need. You need torque and it needs to be avail in the lower RPM range. You could mod your engine and produce an extra 150 HP but if it became avail at 3500 RPMs on up to 6 grand, it would do you little good for towing.

Take it to the track and you would have a blast.

Put all the HP you want but if you can't get it to the pavement at the right RPM, it's useless. Re-gear and add a little HP

Ok good to know. Sounds like regearing is the best option then. I was thinking about torque today after I posted this topic.

I guess a custom grind cam that's made for very low RPM torque, coupled with a tiny stall might be okay. But that will probably cost you more and ruin the day to day driving of the rig.

I'm the in the camp of gears are your best bet.

yep a tune would help, but it would be most effective with a CAI, Exhaust, and a nice tall gear to keep the engine in the meat of its powerband
