Should I Hypertech Before My Roadtrip? What Would I Really Gain...

I am headed down south of the Mason Dixon next week for some R&R and I am wondering what benefit I would see if I reprogrammed using the Hypertech Max Energy Power. I have already begun to notice the AFM and I've hit 98 a couple of times only to feel the torque drop out from under me. (If anyone knows how I can disable the ATM, please tell me)

From what Josh at Real Truck told me about the HMEP, I see it as a win win, but I would like to hear your experiences. Especially the negatives, if there were any. And should I be looking at any others. Thanks.

I don't have a Hypertech but I know something about them, what are you trying to get? Performance, Fuel Economy? AFM, not sure if that can ever be disabled completely....

I guess I am simply trying to kill the AFM and the TM. I can actually feel the truck when it switches. I know I saw a TSB on this. I've got to go look again. Was the TSB VIN specific?

TSBs can be VIN specific, what is your Year Make Model, Body Style (Regular Extended Crew) and email, if I find you anything I will send by email and then post here (Send me your info by way of PM). if memory serves me correctly, I do not believe Hypertech will remove AFM nor TM, but I can double check, unless anyone else wants to chime in.

Nice truck, very nice actually. Get a tune, get a tune, get a tune...no comparison.

The hypertech will increase power, shift points, shift pressure, speed limiter, etc. They won't make any changes at all to TM. It also doesn't provide as much of a power or performance increase as the other handhelds out there. It's about as basic and safe as it gets. And nowhere near a custom tune.

Go with a Diablo or Flashpaq if you really really don't want a custom tune. But you'll end up getting one eventually, so might as well just save some $$$ and go for it now. :sigh:

I was told that handhelds and custom tunes were octane specific, but I know that stock PCMs can recalibrate the engine to run on whatever you are putting in it, 87, 89, 93 octane, does this hold true for these items?

no, using a hand held you need program for an octane seperately. meaning, if you progrma to run on 93, you cant switch over to 87, unless you repgrogram.

i will say i switched from a hypertech programmer to a diablo predator on my 2006 silverado and huge difference. many more option to calibrate plus you can remove some or all aspects of TM to your choosing.

for 2007 GMT 900 models, the predator cant completely remove TM but they do claim they remove a lot of it in the performance tune they supply. also predator cannot switch off AFM.

also predator cannot switch off AFM.

I was just on DiabloSport's website. I've been waiting for an update to the U7194 Predator, to see if they've fixed a memory issue on the Predator for my truck. They released an update, earlier today, that claims to turn off AFM / DoD on supported vehicles. I don't have AFM, so I can't test it. Just thought I'd pass the info along...

I have been running a Hypertech PPIII and here are some observations, my mileage meter has always shown 12.2 mpg if I don't reset it for a month at a time, this is mostly stop and go in town in hilly Seattle and after the programmer install it now reads 12.4 for a mileage increase of .2 mpg. I have tried the 97 and 93 tunes with shift points lowered 2 mph and now am running the 93 tune on 87 octane ( no pinging as it's so cool here). Perhaps a custom tune will do better but I am not convinced enough to spend the money. I believe the factorys would do anything to increase the epa numbers on trucks and if it was as easy as a cold air intake and tune they would be doing it. If you want to mess with the speed limiter or torque management yes you should get a custom tune.
