Shimmy With Brand New Baer Rotors

Recommended Posts

Posted

I purchased a brand new set of Baer drill and slotted rotors that are direct oem replacement, along with a new set of pads for my 02 z71. The original rotors and pads were in rough shape with uneven were, but never had a shimmy.

Could these be warped and defective?

Should i have them turned already?

Could I have done something wrong when installing? I've installed several sets of rotors/pads before with no issues?

I would make sure everything is tight and look at them (spin them) before taking them to get turned. If that does not work, return em and let em know about the shimmy....

Believe it or not, brake rotors and brake drums must be balanced properly to eliminate shimmy or vibration. Typically, drums are balanced when made by spot welding a metal weight on the outside of the drum, rotors are balanced by removing some metal from the heavy part, usually near the inner cooling ribs. Maybe these rotors were not balanced after being made.

I would try balancing the front wheels and rotors as a unit. they used to have a wheel balancer for balancing wheels on the car or truck years ago, I am not sure if anybody sitll has those.

Also, you need to properly torque the lug nuts to avoid rotor warpage. Are you sure the wheels are balanced properly?
