2007 Gmc Sierra Nbs Sound System Help

I just happened to find this forum and it is awesome!

 

I bought a 2007 GMC Sierra 2500HD NBS extended cab short bed diesel a few days ago. Since it was the last of the 2007 models I took what the dealer had in stock and got a pretty good deal too.

 

The truck lacks some of the options I would have preferred though

 

I can add the Homelink option fairly easily. I figure a call to the stealership will get one and the install should be fairly simple.

 

The sound system is about as low end as you can get. The truck has AM FM CD, four speakers with two tweeters on the front windshield pillars.

 

My preference is on the opposite end of what I have now. I want the full blown sound system for the truck. AM FM XM DVD NAV all in a double DIN dash unit. I am sure I will have to add an amp, four high quality speakers and I am not opposed to adding a sub woofer box under the rear seats. Maybe there is enough room in the sub woofer box for a set of rear 6x9 speakers disconnecting/eliminating the rear door speakers? I use an iPod a good bit so the system I choose should have good integration for an iPod.

 

I thought about installing a factory NAV unit along with factory XM but my thinking is an aftermarket unit will be better and just about as expensive… maybe?

 

I have the cash to do all of it but on the other hand I don't want to drop thousands on an award winning system either. Something good in a well balanced package is what I am after. The choices are mind boggling and I am sure many of the people here have been down the same road making good or wishing they would have made better choices.

 

My big requirement is all of the factory system have to work after these changes. Things like the chime, the interior lighting, the steering wheel sound controls, Onstar, etc

 

I am an industrial mechanic and have experience doing some of this work. On the other hand it's hard to beat a man at his given trade. I wouldn't be opposed to letting a good installer do the work but he would have to be good.

 

Any help someone can give me to make my sound system decision easier would be greatly appreciated.
