Getting Glue Off Truck

Recommended Posts

Posted

I took the silver strip of my truck that runs down the side of my truck and it left the adhesive backing on the paint. I've tried GooGone, Soap and Water and WD-40 and can't get it off. Any Suggestions?

GooGone normally works. See if you can get a blow dryer or something to heat it up a bit, then try to get it off. Normally if you do that initially, it'll come off much easier and cleaner.

I always use 3M Adhesive Remove. It comes in a quart can and costs about $13. Kind of expensive, but the can I have been using I bought in 1976 and will probably have to buy a new can next year. Stuff works great. Available at most auto parts stores.

I can't find any fault with the 3M product. But, before you plunk down $13, you may happen to have regular paint thinner (not laquer thinner) or mineral spirits already. Dampen a shop rag with some and drap it over the gummed-up paint for a few minutes, then wipe away. It usually will soften the adhesive up quite nicely. The mineral spirits will not harm the finish, but of course, rewaxing will be required in the area of contact. Lighter fluid, naptha, gasoline and other very-fast-drying solvents evaporate before having broken down the heavy-bodied adhesive. Spirits hangs in there long enough to disolve but will not soften the paint finish. Mineral spirits was the original dry cleaning fluid.

Regular ROHNSOL lighter fuel works great. It works like a charm, it is cheap, available everywhere and most importantly it does not bother your paint and it is compatible with most plastics.

However just like with any other solvent, I still would not skip testing it before use on any new surface.
