We use SEON camera systems on the school buses here. You can get them from single to quad camera if you desire. Have had good luck out of them and are quit reasonable and can be attached to a network for viewing or downloading.

If you don't mind my asking why do you want someting like this? Is it just for the peace of mink that if you get in to a ht and run accident, you have the other person's license plate numbers?

reason we use them in the school system is one word - LAWYERS :)

yes

1. was in accident, where person in front of me cut me off, and side swiped my car, he denied fault..

his insurance wont pay.. and i had to pay my own $500 deducatable. If i had cam, it would have been a no brainer..

2. to monitor the speed and driving habits of any of my workers who may be driving my truck.

3. security.

4. for the fun of hit, (how many times have you seen something when you're driving down the road, that would be funny as hell to post on youTUBE) lol

All of the ones that I've seen are for commercial applications, and very expensive. I used to work for a public transit company. When I left, they were updating each of the 200+ buses with a system of 12 cameras (16 on the 60' articulated busses). Each bus cost around $40k to equip, and required a full size server rack directly behind the driver. Many locomotives are getting this upgrade too.

I don't think the cost and maintenance on a system like this is worth it for the average driver. They're meant for companies that will be sued for millions of dollars in an accident.

The first place to check is companies that do this for police. We have a business here where they put the lights and stuff for police/fire/school busses. There could be various prices, etc.

The other place to look is an electronics store in large city. We have a place here called U-Do-It Electronics - and I have never seen so many camera type stuff.

I get a catalog that is just security cameras. There are lots out there.

I have a color/sound wireless security camera for my driveway and cost was less than $100.00 and that incudes a buzzer/ding and can view it on TV and desktop computer. It ain't the best, but it works. www.x10.com

Go to a SEMA show or a CES show. www.cesweb.org

Used. Where does the used police stuff go?

I think the police stuff is expensive as a guess. But I also think it can be done on the cheap if one does some looking. If you can do it yourself. If paying to have it installed - more.

You can get small bullet cameras off camera sites and e-bay for under $100 that run on 12V DC. Grab a pocket sized DVR that runs on 12 V or has a converter and you would be set. The only thing I don't know is how you would get the DVR to turn on and off when the ignition came on. If you got a 12V tape recorder and stuck it under the seat you could wire it into the SEO connector under the dash that only supplies power when the engine is running. Maybe look for a pocket sized DVR that would immediately start recording when it received power, and then wire it as such where it only comes on when the engine is running. Check our scdlink.com and other sites for camera stuff. I've been fooling around with these inexpensive cameras for peace of mind and security around my home and barn and they are really easy to obtain, install, and maintain. If you have more than $500 in it it's not worth it. I bet you could put a good camera and digital DVR in the truck for around $300, but again not sure how to make the DVR record when you want it to record (when the truck is running I assume).
