Mag Hytec Diff Cover Install Questions

I searched but didnt find any install tips for the mag hytec cover, but If I missed the thread forgive me but I tried :lol:

 

Anyway, My mag hytec diff cover is due to arrive this week so I have a couple questions for those that have them. First, I know it comes with an o-ring seal...but was that suffcient to prevent leaks?....need any RTV at all?

 

Basically any tips/links or install advice will be greatly appreciated :D

The O-ring is all you need. It seals great. Do not use any sealent. I also have the Mag-Hytec trans pan that uses the O-ring as well.

 

If you fill to the mark on the dip-stick you will over fill. I called Mag-Hytec and they said extensive testing showed that the factory level was insuficient for a long lasting gear set and that they had best results with the higher gear oil level. I have been running it like this for over a year towing a camper in the summer and have had NO trouble.

Im confused....dont fill to the dipstick level mark...and dont fill to factory specs...so what do I fill too?

 

Its the 10 bolt so how much gear oil do I need to buy/fill?

The dip stick has 2 marks on it. You get the oil level between these marks. That will be about 1/2 inch above stock level. Thats what I am running now. There is a small plug about half way up the cover. If you fill to this hole , that will be the stock level. The directions are fairly clear. I called Mag-Hytec and they recommend to fill to the marks on the dip stick. I think its about 3 1/2 quarts.

 

I think you are worrying too much. You will see what I am talking about when you get the cover and directions.

Thanks for this thread, I have been looking at both covers for towing enclosed trailer and with a camper in bed also. the trans cover comes tapped for a temp sensor which i would like to have. I just have to get over their price and buy them. It would be really nice if the trans cover had a quick change cover on the bottom to remove the filter without taking the gear selector mount off and the heat shield. What a pain.

yep... all you need is the o-ring. I have both covers and they both work great. However, i think my larger transmission cooler helped WAY more in keeping my trans cool than the cover did. All the trans cover does it hold more fluid, i didn't see any temperature drops after i installed it.

Thanks Don, Its suppose to be delivered this week so I will read the instructions then and compare to your notes...I just like getting real world advice from members like yourself that have done the install. Plus syn gear lube aint cheap so I wanted to buy the right amount and not too much :D

    • Most say the oil temperature needs to above the boiling point of water to rid it of moisture and long enough to dry it. Many think that is about a hour at 212 F or more. Those people have never line dried cloths in a Midwest winter. Leave a pan of water sitting on the counter and eventually it all evaporates. So heat drives the time it takes. Water in oil under 175 F, the Nitration initiation temperature, is a minimum then for temperature and samples I've done that use Karl Fisher method say about a hour (in a healthy well tuned motor) over 175 F will dry it to under 800 ppm. Low enough to not be much of a factor. Motors with weak rings will take longer and the colder the air temperature the longer it takes.   On a cold motor there is also the condensation temperature. Blowby gases that contain moisture are subject to that cold cylinder wall, like sweat on a glass of ice tea. But also subject to the Law of Partial Pressures. Wear studies by GM and the DOD  indicate wear is a real issue below 85 F and a concern to 140 F but doesn't become a minimal factor until about 160 F. You know this intuitively when you see water vapor exit the exhaust pipe until the system gets above the dew point. It isn't magic, it's physics and it fascinates me. I know you didn't ask but....I over share sometimes. 😉    You keep the Camaro's high and tight.  
    • Move further away.   Benefit of living out - none of our cars get short cycled, plenty of warm up time.   Curious how much time/temperature it takes to drive moisture/condensation out of the engine?
    • Switch a a 100% synthetic trans fluid, Amsoil works for me.
    • First of all sorry, I know there are a ton of transmission temperature threads...   My truck is a 2025 LZ0 High (10l89 10-speed) High Country with NHT max trailering package. The NHT package is supposed to have "enhanced cooling."   Normally the trans temp sits around 200. It seems like with any real stress it quickly jumps into the 220s (for example climbing a grade unloaded at lower speeds). I haven't towed much with this truck, but I'm concerned if it gets this hot unloaded.    I've tried a few different things to keep the temps down (tow/haul mode, sport mode, low range when that makes sense) and nothing seems to affect it.    I'm curious if others are the same behavior or if anyone has found techniques to keep the temps down. It seems like it just can't handle reduced airflow at lower speeds, even with relatively light loading.    Thanks!      
    • I'm at 105,000 miles on my baby Duramax. No issues yet. I hit 31 mpg's traveling through hilly terrain to a project in Colorado. I will buy another 3.0. I'm not concerned.
