Trailer Brake Controller Pre-wiring

Recommended Posts

Hey y'all,

I just picked up a "new" tow rig....a '99 K2500 Suburban with a 350. I'm about to order a trailer brake controller and was wondering if it's already pre-wired for it? If so, where would it be located? Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Tommy

Something to look for would be the 7-pin plug at the trailer hitch - which might indicate the previous owner had it wired. Otherwise, the OBS GM vehicles are not factory wired for a brake controller. I paid $150 to have a shop wire up my '98 2500HD wired up a few years back, with another $120 into the controller.

Thanks. Yeah, I've not seen a plug other than a flat four pin on the truck. Good news is it wasn't used to tow much. Bad news is I need to wire up the new brake controller myself. :)

99 was all old body style - look for a blue wire under the hood around the brake booster - there could also be an orange one there too. Both wires go to the trailer connector in the rear of the rig - the blue is for the brakes and the orange is for the +12V hot wire. The rest of the connectors for a brake controller are in the cab - you will need +12V, GND, a wire from the brake pedel switch. There is also a wire that needs to be connected to that blue one.
