Low-beam/foglight Relay Kit - Mrtaillight.com

For those of you interested in having your foglights always come on with your low-beams, you can purchase this kit from MrTailLight.com or HighBeamKits.com (same place). The idea behind this kit is actually so that your foglights don't turn off when you're using your high-beams. In other words, when you use your high-beams, all six lights come on (2-lows, 2-highs, 2-fogs). Instead of tapping into the positive line of my high-beam circuit, I tapped into the positive line of my low-beam circuit. The end result is that my foglights come on whenever my low-beams do.

Yes, there are people that are against this practice because the foglights are only to be used when there's fog and I am an inconsiderate driver for having them on all of the time.

Yes, there are people that would call me lazy because I can't just reach down and hit the button to turn them on every single time I turn on my truck.

NOTICE TO THESE PEOPLE: It's my truck. I want the lights on all of the time. I think they look good when they're on. I always forget to turn them on. Get it? Got it? Good! :)

Well, the purpose of this thread is to show those of you who are interested in this modification exactly what is included in the kit, just in case you want to purchase one. Also, for those of you who are technically inclined to do so, you can use this thread as a reference and create your own kit. Personally, I checked the internet and didn't find these pics anywhere, so I decided to give back a little. God knows I've learned a lot from all of you!

Anyways, here goes...

This is a pic of the relay that comes with the kit.

This is a pic of the wiring harness that's attached to the pins on the relay.

This is a pic showing the ends of the exposed black and white wires coming off of the relay. The black wire goes to ground. The white wire (in my case) goes to the positive wire on the low-beam. It attaches to this wire with the use of a t-tap connector.

This is a pic showing the two remaining covered/loomed wires coming off of the relay. The loomed wire with the blue male connector goes to the positive wire on the foglight. It attaches to this wire with the use of a t-tap connector. The loomed wire with the round ring terminal on the end attaches to the 12-volt, always-on source at the fuse box.

This is a pic of the things that come included in the kit inside of a zip-loc bag. There's a self-tapping screw used for mounting the relay. There are two t-tap connectors used for tapping into the positive wires of the (in my case) low-beam and foglight wires. Finally, there are four tie-wraps that are used for keeping the loose cabling neat and out of the way when you're all done.

Finally, this is a pic of the instruction sheet that came with the kit. Please remember, I tapped into the low-beams, NOT the high-beams, like indicated on the instruction sheet. Once again, my intent was to have the foglights come on every time my low-beams came on, even during the day when the daytime running lights come on. The intent of the kit and the instructions is to have the foglights stay on when using your high-beams, instead of turning off like they usually do. The end result of wiring like indicated in the instruction sheet is that you will have all six lights stay on at the same time when using your high-beams.

If anyone has any questions regarding this kit, please don't hesitate to ask. In my opinion, this kit is very well put together and I give kudos to the folks at MrTailLight.com / HighBeamKits.com for doing such a fine job for such a small price.

Good luck to you!

Thanks Victor! I think a lot of people will find this to be very handy. I wonder if I can tap in to my parking lights. Hmm...

Will, no problem, bud! I figured it's the least I can do after soaking up all of the knowledge around here.

Oh, and you can tap into anything you want, as long as you use the positive side of the parking light circuit. As my daughter would say, "it's easy, peasy, Japaneasy!" :)

I like the idea of having all of the lights on at once, unfortunately it is illegal in the state of MO:

Well this definately is a great kit! Only problem is all this is is a standard 12v relay which you can get at Radio Shack or any auto part store for under $3. Add in some split loom tubing, 2 ring terminals, 2 wire nuts (or T-Taps) and it shouldnt run you more than about $8!!

You're right. But at $13.99 including shipping, its not much difference.

This isn't using any power from the computer of the truck right? 'i have heard horror stories of trying to add light etc and having the check engine light be on.

Sounds almost too easy.

Thanks

This is great stuff. But all I want is for my fog lights to stay on when I hit the high beams. All I want on is my high beams and fog lights, no low beams, unless I have it on low beam. Right now the fogs turn off when you hit high beams. Any help would be great.

I also found this harness from suvlights.com:

http://www.suvlights.com/product_info.php?products_id=112

What I like about it is that it uses 14AWG wiring which is much safer if you are using high wattage bulbs. The factory harness is only 16 or 18 and is really not meant for high output lighting. It snaps right in place with the factory harness and uses the factory connectors to activate the 40 amp relays. The bulbs themselves are power directly from the battery with a fusible link in line. It also allows the highs and lows to be on at the same time. I have it on order and will report the results when it gets in.

You should check on the terminology...here in Texas the law differentiates between headlamps and fog/driving/auxiliary lamps. You might can have four headlamps PLUS two driving lamps....
