Posi For My Zoe

Here goes, second thread, love this site though. You guys all give supreme advice. I have an '05 silverado 1500. Its got the z-71, towing, 17" aluminums, limited rear, auto trac 4x4. Not sure what else anyone might need to know. I do know that I have 3.42 gearing. But here's my dilema, the factory limited sucks big balls.....so I want to install a locker or posi, haven't finalized that decision. What rear end do I have?

I get on these site where you can order kits, and they have a million different bolt patterns that will give you an idea of which one you have...but how do I determine the exact kind??? I'm sure I could order a part, and just send it back if it's wrong, but I really don't feel like doing it.

Another question, when is everyone changing their diff and tranny fluid? What other services should I look at while I am approaching my 50k mark??

Thanks again guys.

I hate to tell you this,but if you got a Z71 you already have a locking diff.,not a "limited-rear".

Check the glovebox label for "G80",Thats the code for the locking differential.

The rear-end in your truck is an 8.625 inch 10-bolt.

I understand that it locks, ??but only in 4by?? I want to be able to lock it on the street, realizing that being bound together at all times is not always beneficial. It should be acting as a limited slip...but we all know how well that one goes over.

4 wh dr has nothing to do with it. Its an Eaton gov lock G80. It locks when one wheel spins a certain % faster than the other. It unlocks above 20 mph.

No, my G80 will lock in 2w or 4w drive. Yours should too, unless something has changed. I doubt it though.

Oh ok, I was led to believe that it electronically locked in 4by. Well, at any rate, it works whenever it feels like it. When turning from a stop, under moderate throttle, it will offen just clunk clunk clunk as it locks and unlocks...

I am due to service my diffs and tranny, so while I have it open, I may as well tinker. I'm searching now for a good locker that I can selectively use. Any suggestions???

I was thinking allong the lines of, "affordable" too, nothing extravagant.

It definately wouldnt hurt. You will notice a loss in power if you dont.

If you look at the specs though, my factory tires are 32" in diameter. I am running 275/70/17s (or something close as I can't go look right at this second) on OEM 17 aluminums

How many splines do I have? Is there any way that I can find some identifying numbers and run them off a reference to make sure that my information is correct? I really can't seem to find much either in the way of a locker, I guess I will have to start emailing some companies to see what they may have on a back shelf. I would prefer to find a selectable locker, via air, cable, or electronic. Thank you for your help already.

If you change the rear diff size, I think you also need to change the front diff.

Well I would certainly change both the front and the rear, but I need to know what I have before I go taking it apart. I work often and not having a garage...well...puts a damper on things. (They really don't even like me changing out my shocks and everything in the apartment's parking lot.) ha ha

ive got 33's on mine and i seem to have almost the same exact truck as you. there was a slight difference when i put the bigger tires on in acceleration, but nothing to to drastic. i am thinking about moving up to at least 4.10s though. my question for you, however, is how did the diablo tuner go for you? was it worth the 300 something dollars?

So far, I love it. I can really see a difference. I still have a few things that I want to work with it, but it certainly adds those extra horses. When the truck is cold, the shifts do have a bit of delay since the tune is telling the trans to boost its shift pressure. The delay is ever so slight though. Once the truck has a few miles on it, and everything is running at operating temp, it will chirp second at about half throttle.

There is a method that I want to try, goto this link and read up:

This guy has a Monte SS, but has worked long and hard to fine tune his settings based on a method he developed. You need the PC interface kit, which I have on order, and some time, but everyone there seems to have excellent results.

My reasoning for getting this tuner is that it is recommended by STS, who builds an aft mounted turbo for our trucks. I have been seriously considering slapping one on. I think I can do about 13 psi without blowing anything up. The tune that they send with the kit is built for the Predator Tuner. So, I looked, I read, and then decided over the period of a couple months.

Even just for what it's given me already, I personally think the tuner was worth it. I found it for 311.00 at this site below, and paid no shipping. Like I said, you would need the PC interface kit to do what those guys on the above link are doing. I should have ordered that as well, I just wasn't thinking at the time. But, its on its way now. The link below leads to the guys I bought it from, got it in about three days, down in Oklahoma, no shipping charges.

Good luck, I really like the truck.

Oh, and I am sitting on 265/70/17" Firestone Destination LEs, they suck. They are nice and quiet, but they suck. I had them in 3" of snow a couple weeks ago, and just couldn't get anywhere. Definitely gonna change that. According to the company, they are 31.7" in diameter. Like I said tho, they suck in mud, they suck in the rain, and they suck worse in the snow. Never again. Its knobbies for me from now on.
