Need Help! Cant Find Clunk/popping 07 Nbs1500

Ok, I ve had this really bad creaking/clunk/popping on the driver side while driving 10mph or under. Very noticeable while turning left slowly. Also you can from a dead stop let off the brake then re apply and you get the same popping. creaking noise. Just had the upper control arm placed two days ago and its still doing it. Links, tie rods and everything under the hood appear tight and nothings rattling. It does it when warm or when driven more than about 20 miles. Leads me to believe it might be in the steering rack or something in the steering?? Any ideas or experiences

 

truck is a 2007 silverado 1500 2wd ext cab 5.3 lt1 package

 

Im getting pissed now because the bcm has gone out,the aspirator on the celing has gone out, this issue and numerous rattles and squeaks from the dash and doors my 2003 1500 had 0 problems when i got rid of it at 57k :D

probably a bushing and a tie rod, mine had the exact same problem.....and one of the crossmembers was replaced as well.....

This bulletin is being revised to update the parts information to include a new washer for HUMMER H2. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 03-08-61-002H (Section 08 -- Body and Accessories).

Condition

Some customers may comment on a snap or popping-type noise coming from the front of the vehicle. This condition is most apparent during hard left or right turns at low speeds. Going over bumps while turning may also aid in producing this noise.

Correction

Remove the bolt-in front crossmember and add washers using the procedure listed below.

 

Important: DO NOT slot the mounting holes on the crossmember as stated in previous bulletins. Slotting the holes has been found to be less effective and, in some cases, causes the noise condition to be more prevalent.

 


  1. <LI type=1>Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in SI. <LI type=1>Remove the mounting nuts, bolts and the front crossmember from the vehicle. <LI type=1>Clean all the undercoating off the crossmember in the area of the mounting holes. <LI type=1>Reinstall the crossmember with the bolts and nuts. On the driver and passenger side, add washer P/N 11509592 (C/K models) or P/N 15567836 (H2), or equivalent hardened washer (see dimensions below), at each bolt head and nut location. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 120 N·m (89 lb ft).
     
  2. Apply an even coat of Anti-Corrosion Coating, P/N 12346501 (in Canada, 10952414), or equivalent, to the crossmember where removed. Overlap the original coating in order to provide an effective corrosion protection.

Some customers may comment on a pop or clunk type noise while turning or driving on uneven road surfaces. This noise can be heard and/or felt at either the driver's or front passenger floor pan area.

Cause

Under certain conditions, normal movement between the frame and body mount may cause this noise to occur.

Correction

Install an insulator at the right and left side #1 body mounts. The insulator should be installed between the upper portion of the body mount and the frame bracket. The #1 mount is the mount located just under the A-pillar. Use the procedure listed below.

 


  1. <LI type=1>Raise the vehicle on the hoist. It is recommended to use a four-post lift or strap the vehicle frame to the hoist arms. <LI type=1>For the left side mount only, remove the intermediate park brake cable. Perform the following steps:

2.1. Remove the nut from the park brake equalizer.

 

 

2.2. Remove the intermediate cable from the equalizer.

 

 

2.3. Depress the retaining tabs that secure the park brake cable to the frame.

 

 

2.4. Pull slightly on the cable from the mounting area in order to provide slack for body movement without binding the cable.

 

<LI type=1>Remove all of the body mount bolts on the side being repaired. <LI type=1>Properly support the body at the #1 body mount area.

Caution: When you remove the body mount, do NOT separate the frame from the body more than is necessary. Possible personal injury and damage to multiple parts may result.
 
<LI type=1>Lower the chassis accordingly in order to remove the upper portion of the #1 body mount. Important: While the body mount is removed, check the underbody area that interfaces with the top of the body mount for excess build-up of E-Coat Primer or other foreign material. If the surface is not smooth use a 90 degree die grinder, or equivalent to remove the excessive build-up. Apply an anti-corrosion protection, P/N 12378398 (in Canada, 10952414), to the bare surface as necessary to prevent rusting.

<LI type=1>Install the new insulator to the bottom of the top portion of the #1 body mount. The picture shows the insulators (1) location after the body mount is reassembled. <LI type=1>Install the #1 body mount to the frame bracket. <LI type=1>Perform the following procedure before installing the bolts.

8.1. Clean the bolt threads of all the original thread locking compound.

 

 

8.2. Clean the threads of the bolt with denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.

 

 

8.3. Apply Threadlocker, GM P/N 12345493 (In Canada use P/N 10953488).

 

<LI type=1>Install the body mount bolts. Tighten
For 2003, 2004 and 2005 model year, tighten the bolts to 85 N·m (63 lb ft).
 
Tighten
For 2006 and 2007 model year, tighten the bolts to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).
 
<LI type=1>Reinstall the intermediate park brake cable. <LI type=1>Repeat steps 3-9 for the other side.

Test drive the vehicle to verify the repair.

and yes they are attached to the lower mounts with new bolts supplied from the manufacturer. If I stand on them or tug on them I get no noise. I could maybe see them causing a rubbling noise from the metal to meatl contact with the bracket at most but not this popping/cracking, my truck does it when warm which makes me believe its a tie rod or something in the rack?? Have you heard of nerf bars causing issue? If so I would think it would do the same on the p/s too.

Did your noise start happening after you installed the nerf bars? If so, you may want to retighten the mounting bolts. There have been problems in the past with noises that were caused by the cab mounting bolts not tightened properly. What happens is the frame flexes and causes the cab to bounce or move just enough to cause the noise. Might be worth checking in to it.

I think the torque specs were in the range for 110 lbs to 180 lbs if you put nerf bars on....check your documentation.....

Could possibly be your steering shaft..... here at the GM dealership i work at we replace those daily apperently the robot at the assembly plant fell asleep and made the shaft that connects to the rack and pinnion a little to long which makes it pop....i would suggest going back to your dealer and report it to them if it is the steering shaft they have to replace it under warranty......

My truck has the same sound from the drivers side and it is the insulator that you need. I had a creaking on the passenger side of my truck after I installed the nerf bars. The dealer said that once those get installed, that's when people start coming in for the creaking/popping sound. They installed the $3.50 insulator and the creaking has been gone for about a year. I now have the popping under foot (so it sounds) and will need to do the job on the drivers side as well.

 

Does anyone know exactly what needs to be done on this side with the brake cable? I read the above, but not sure what it's telling me. Do I have to remove the brake cable connection to install the insulator? Thanks

I had the same problem dealer had to replace the leafsprings. There is a TSB for the leaf spring inserts but when they put the new ones in it was still loose so they ordered new leaf springs. They also informed me of another TSB for the exhaust system being too close to the crossmember and needing to be adjusted. I don't know the document numbers. They also had to fix 2 rattles in the dash board, and the buzzing noise from all 4 door panels. I had an 06 Ram that didnt rattle or creak or need any funny repairs like new leaf springs. My Dads 2000 F150 has never been to the dealer and it has never squeaked or rattled, and my parents have fairly rough roads were they live. I live in Phoenix with rubberized smooth as glass roads and freeways! I hate rattles and I hate to say it again but GM, everything they make is still 10 years behind in quality than everyone else. I will never buy another one. Good looking truck I love it but I think I am used to a higher quality product.

Condition

Some customers may comment on a rear leaf spring slap or clunk noise. This noise is most apparent when the vehicle is operated over irregular road surfaces.

Correction

Important: DO NOT disassemble the main pack on the leaf spring or remove the bushing from the spring.

Verify that the rear leaf spring inserts (1) are present on the leading and trailing ends of the overload spring (second stage leaf). The insert may have broken apart from wear and fallen out. If the inserts are not present, install new ones.

 

Important: On some models, the vehicle may have to be raised to allow the springs to separate enough so the insert can be installed.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
