Exterior Door Handle Replacement

Recommended Posts

I though it was posted before but I've searched for two days trying to find it. How do you replace the exterior door handles on the new GMT-900's? I know how to get the inner door panel off, but wasn't sure if there is anything else back there.

Not much too it. There is a rubber plug in the door for bolt access. Remove lock and latch rods remove 2 bolts and remove handle. Reverse to install and make sure you get both rods in correctly before you put the panel back on.

Is it like on the 800 platform, I did them on my '99 and assume it is fairly similar, just wanted to make sure. Perhaps i'll take my camera and shoot some pics when I try it.

Got mine put on. It was pretty straight forward. Remove the triangle piece behind the side view mirror, it just pulls off. Then pull the cover off the vertical grab bar, I started at the bottom, there is a groove to pry on. The (2) 10mm bolts behind it and then the grab bar is free. Pulled firmly on the door switch plate and it came off unplugged all the connectors. Gently pryed at the cover behind the arm rest and it comes out pretty easy. Gently pryed at the cover behind the door handle and it eventually came off. Removed the (3) 10mm bolts behind those. The door lock thing was tricky because how to release the "Detent Tab" wasn't terribly obvious. I ended up prying the little square box off the front of it, and that seemed to be it. Pryed all the clips around the perimeter of the panel loose. Getting the interior door handle free was a trick, because the release clips are completely hidden, and completely impossible to get to. I ended up prying and twisting on the base of the cable to get it loose, the freed the little ball at the end of the cable from the handle. Then remove the (2) 10mm bolts holding the handle on. There is a tray that catches the bolts when they fall, they don't make it all the way to the bottom. The handles slide back a little bit too before theey can be freed. Installation is a reversal of the removal.

Just like the pictures in the link show, should have checked them prior to starting.
