How To Better Gas Milage

Recommended Posts

ya i have a 2000 silverado 4x4 with split flowmasters and a 4.8L V8 vortec engine. I get 300 miles on a full tank and that cost me about 80 bucks to fill up. is there anything i can do to improve this?

i just got my oil changed, a chip is a bit expencive but it might be my only option other than a cold air intake. i bought this resister that is suposed to help but i think its crap lol, but i do think it added some horses. anyone tried one of them. It goes in the iat sensor and is supose to add up to 20 horses and 10mpg. now it varries for each type of vehical but that is the best it does. so is it bs or is there something to it.

still any other ideas are gladly welcomed.

THANKS,

you can do all that but wont see any noticable difference, just my experiance

Other than driving like a granny, the ONLY thing I've ever added to a vehicle that improved fuel economy at all is a tune. I even got the performance tune in my SS and still gained 1mpg.

Of course, YMMV ;)

that things supposed to add 10mpg? noooo way thats ever happening with any modification lol there is no such thing unless your coasting down a 10 mile hill. Be careful with what you buy out there, like on ebay, #1 source for scams.

Get a PCM tune that will help a little, like 2mpg at most, betters the engine power and re-adjusts the transmission shift points so you can get better mileage. And as others have said easy on the throttle, keep it under 2000rpms helps too

Ditch the resistor thingy. All its doing as fooling the ECM to ADD more fuel. The CAI isnt going to help either. There are no "secrets" to better gas mileage or GM would of used them for better MPG figures to beat the competitors.

The only way would to drive like grandma, or buy a prius.

Nope...nothing that would offset the cost of it. Only thing I noticed was a slight loss on the low end, so I removed it and it's still sitting in my garage in the box. Spend your money on a tune if you want to by something.

I have noticed a couple extra miles per tank if you use your cruise as much as possible.

if you have aggressive tires that will hurt you, using A/C will kill your mileage, winter time will also drop your mpg...same as the resistor thing, your ECM dumps more fuel at colder temps due to having a denser air charge...denser charge means you can support more fuel in the mixture.

Changing your belt driven fan with an electric unit will gain an mpg or 2, a tune like was stated will give you 1-3mpg increase depending if its an economy tune or performance tune, aside from this, ensure you keep your tire pressures in spec, and keep you fuel/intake system clean for peak performance.

I have an 03 with the 4.8, a dual FM exhaust and a heavy right foot, I get 300miles per tank, at $120 per. Fuel is almost $5 a gallon in Victoria Canada, and I use 92 octane. I also fill my tank at least once a week. I've gotten to the point that if its empty fill it, drive it like I want to and laugh when they say the total, theres very little I can do about it, and spending 700-1000 bucks to remedy the situation and save 200 bucks a year is just pointless.

As for the CAI...you already have one stock, the air is drawn from the fender into the stock air box, which is exactly what a CAI is. Its the Tubing between the Box and the TB that is restrictive, you can replace this for under 100 bucks. There are various posts on here about this subject.

Advantages are more hp in the mid and high rpm range (if your in this range all the time you will definitely not be saving fuel), and a louder engine note. As for increased Fuel economy, it wont be enough to offset the cost of the intake.

Like everyone said, get an economy tune from someone like wait4me (150 bucks or thereabouts), this is the most beneficial modification you can make for fuel economy. Anything else would take longer to recover the cost, than it would be worth.

a tonneau cover will give you a little more. maybe 2. anything you put into it though to gain mileage, your gonna have to keep it awile to recoup the cost. number one thing though is to drive like a grandma. thats your best bet. regearing might help a little bit, but thats money as well.

    • More is cylinder deactivation. Kia-Hyundai Ive had 4. The warranty is the same 10 years 100K miles. My grandson drives the first one 05 Elantra GT. My wife drives the second one 2011 Genesis. The Genesis still performs as new and looks great. The Elantra looks rough. He’s not kind to it. The third was a Genesis coup. The fourth was a Santa Fe. Those were my daily drivers. I don’t keep them long. Kia is the same as Hyundai with the same warranty. I looked at the K-4 today. Too small, otherwise pretty good buy. Most of Hyundai and Kia’s have a performance upgrade.
    • Thanks for the point of reference
    • Great question. Answer....depends. One the volume of the crankcase, the driver that will actually be using the vehicle and the amount it uses plus the distance expected for that next trip. Couple of for instances:   Wife is going to drive Dizzy to Moline and back plus a bit around town so say 500 miles on the day. I know from years with that SUV that around town and local rural it uses about a quart in 1250 miles. But on the Interstate and her at the wheel without her anchor nagging her she'll push it and it will drop a quart in about 800 miles. Hence, around town I wait to somewhere between a quarter down to a quart down. On her trip I'd top it if it was down a few ounces and hope for the best.    Have I overfilled one? You mean by adding before it needs a full quart I assume. No, not once after finding the true fill mark.  I know the dipsticks of everything I drive and add what it needs. I learn this by doing the first oil change a quart low. Run the motor for a few minutes. Let it sit over night. Check and mark. Then add half a cup at a time making note of the place on the stick. I add through the dipstick tube with a barbeque basting bottle. Give it a few minutes to drain down and check again.    A vehicle like Dizzy that uses this much oil will take a few quarts between 3K changes. I keep one in the vehicle with the bottle and a bag. (Mindful of it's fullness) Not a big deal and never makes a mess of it. There is no such thing as "multiple quarts' in my shop for any specific oil. There will be a maximum however of the number of different oils used over the fleet.     Dizzy holds a nominal 5 quarts. So the first fill was indeed over as it actually took 4.75. My vehicles are fit with Valvomax valves so I can meter an ounce on the drain if need be. Found her mark first crack at it. Never to be repeated.    Pepper uses none between changes so I don't keep a quart in that one. Straight up 6 quarts put her dead on the full line. Check it ever fuel stop. They will surprise you when they start using.    Raven holds 3 liters or 5.44 ounces over three quarts. I add 3 quarts and 6 ounces. That gives me 5 oil changes on my orphan quart.    Lawnmower holds about 3/5 of a quart. I don't over fill it to prevent an orphan. So yea, depends.
    • 185k on original 6.2L engine and 10 speed. 6" lift with 35" tires. Changed oil (Mobil 1 synthetic) when truck told me to. Original tranny with original fluid and no service or flush done. All highway miles. A/C compressor replaced at 155k. Oil cooler line replaced at 180k. Still daily driver. Love this truck.   This is my 3rd 6.2L vehicle (2008 Yukon Denali / 2018 Cadillac Escalade) with over 150k miles and no issues. Denali had broken motor mount at 100k.
