Tpms In Wheels?

2007 NBS 2500HD 2wd. Just picked up a set of factory 17" wheels with the bridgestone 265/70/17 tires. The previous owner said he was there when they put on his new wheels and they just tossed his old wheels in the back of his truck. But it looks as if someone broke down the tires as there are chalk marks where the weights go and all the tires were at 40lbs. Is there any way to tell if the sensors are still in there? If they are, will the DIC recognize the new set of wheels if I set the pressure to the factory settings front and rear? I've done the relearn procedure in the owners manual and it worked fine on my old set. Just do this on the new set? Lotta questions but thanks.

Yeah. The valve stem caps are almost half an inch long. Not 1/4 inch or so like a standard cap. You could always break one down and see what you get if all else fails.

Thanks for the replies. I went to the tirerack site and then checked the new rims. Yeah my old steel wheels have the long valve caps but the new aluminum wheels have a chrome press on sleeve and a short chrome valve cap with wrench flats on it. Is that what came with the optional 17" aluminum wheels? I also wiggled the stem on my old wheels and could feel a clicking I think when the sensor inside hit the rim. But nothing on the new ones. I guess I could break one down and see. If they're not there can I use the ones from my old steel rims? Are the stems and sensors separate parts?

Those press on chrome covered stems with the hex head caps are pretty standard aftermarket aluminum wheel non TPMS valve stems. It doesn't sound like they have the sensors in them after all. I believe that you can use the sensors out of your old wheels. The stems and sensors need to be used together.

I think you can buy those stems at the dealer. Kind of pricey thought, $7-$8 each vs. .25 for regular valve stems.

    • I was in Utah this week attempting a bow hunt in the Wasatch mountains with friends.  On the evening of the first hunt, making my way across a ridge to a friends camp, the upper control arm on the driver's side separated, the CV axle got trashed, and the wheel was dang near at a 45 degree angle to the ground.  I was able to get it towed off the mountain and into town about 3:00 am, and spent the remainder of the night in an O'Reilly's parking lot.  Luckily, there was a Chevrolet dealership not to far away so I was able to get to the dealership and pick up a new CV and UCA.  It would have been a few days before they could have gotten to the truck and I brought tools with me on hunt since it was a two day drive to get there, so I did the repairs myself in the O'Reilly's parking lot.      What's interesting is that the UCA ball joint didn't break, it just popped out of the bottom of the UCA.  There was VERY LITTLE evidence of grease on the ball joint or in the socket, and you could see where the ball joint had warbled out part of the socket over time.  I guess that's what happens over 186K miles of use :)   Big Kudos to O'Reilly's for letting me work on the truck in their parking lot.  However, they made a $150+ off of me from the purchase of various tools, so I guess it was in their best interest anyways :)   Getting towed off the mountain.   UCA Ball Joint Socket   Trashed CV   Suspension disconnected and UCA and CV Removed   New UCA and CV installed with the suspension buttoned up.    
    • My family still laughs at me when they see me drive up in the minivan. Same with less than a V-8 truck. It helps that I have choices. I don’t think I could only have a minivan as the one and only vehicle as much as I like it. And I wouldn’t pass up a good buy on an older V-8 reg cab GM truck. Could you live Raven as the only ride?
