Air Box Filter Question

I have recently bought a 2005 Duramax Diesel, and I am wondering if the person who previously owned the truck has made any modifications to the airbox. When looking at the airbox, it is missing the side closest to the fender well. It draws air right through the end of the box. Is this how it is suposed to be, or am I missing something?

Believe it or not, that is how the truck was built. It is a huge induction blunder on the part of GM, that results in a very effective lost power scenario when the truck gets hot.
