Fuel Pump Removal.

I'm pretty sure my fuel pump is gone in my 2001 4.8 extended cab 4x4, curious what is the easiest way to get at the fuel pump, can i drop the tank from the bottom, or do i have to take the box off? Any help would be appreciated.

Don't drop the tank and don't remove the bed just tilt up enough to sneek the pump out. Remove the the eight bolts that hold the bed to the frame. Remove the three screws that hold the filler neck to the bed under the fuel cap. Get a jack and pipe and jack up the bed towards the front right behind the cab just enough to where you can get at the fuel pump. You may want to put some blocks between the bed and frame once it's jacked for safety after that your good to go. Easiest by far trust me! Buy a delco pump cuz they also come with a update fuel pump connector in the box which is more then likely why the old on failed. The connector is a updated and much better then the old. :lol:

 

This guy has done this before. And has probably also done it all the wrong ways. I like this way. :sleep:

 

Actually I perfer to use the lift in my shop and tranny jacks I was assuming he was doing in his driveway by himself. Thank you for confindence in all the WRONG things I do jackoff!

Well sir, that was one way to take my comment. Now that you have taken it the WRONG way, all that is left is the way I meant it, which is in the most complimentary way possible. Your experience, however is the only thing I have anything positive to comment on.

 

Just what finishing school did you graduate from, anyway?

ya drop the tank, pretty easy (if u have a lift and a tranny jack of some sort LOL) JUST DROP A LIL AT A TIME TO MAKE SURE U GET EVERYTHING DISCONNECTED. oops hit caps sry (ya too lazy to retype)

 

 

My feedback is that by far the easiest and quickest is to just take the bed off. I have not done this personally but have heard this from more than one that I would have good creditability in.

Yes, from what I heard, taking off the bed is far easier. But be careful, if the truck was ever in an accident, it might of tweaked the frame a little bit, which will make it difficult to put the bed back on.

Thanks guys, i figure we'll be dropping it down, will be doing it at friends garage who has a hoist and a tranny jack. My friend has done lots of tank removals but not a 2001 chev truck, so i had to ask.

 

PS. Even though we got all the gear, i think we'll still be into a 12 pack. :cheers:

I've done it, and I can tell you without question that pulling the bed off is easier. Unplug the tail lights, disconnect the fuel filler neck, and unbolt the bed. It's like 6 (or 8) very easily accessed bolts. Lift it off. That's it.

I've seen it done that way, and with my style of garage work...That's not much fun. You're still squeezing into a fairly small space to do the work. I much prefer to just take the whole thing off and sit on a frame rail with my beer and milk the job for an entire day.

 

However a) his method is probably MUCH easier when you only have yourself b) much faster and c) will make it easier to maintain bed alignment.

Update: Got my pump out last night.

 

= Lifted truck up on hoist.

= Disconnected fuel lines

= Disconnected tank filler neck

= Unbolted tank straps

= Lowered tank down on tranny jack

= Removed fuel pump

 

Total of = 45 minutes

Now waiting for new pump to come in today.
