Failed Inspection

Just had my 95 Sierra inspected it needs: Rt outer CV boot replaced, Drive Belt, Rt rear wheel cylinder leaks, power steering pump leaks, replace exhaust from converter back. To me it looks like minor stuff and I have no problem doing it myself…they quoted me $1400 to fix…am I missing something here?

No, but if you pay $1400 TO FIX IT, You'll be missing about $1000 out of your pocket that should still be there.

I would clean up the areas where the leaks are and try a different inspector.

wow, that seems pretty strict. At least compared to my state, where they dont check anything. not even for a muffler or not.

Took mine to chevy dealer a month ago and they said the tint was too dark (haven't changed it in 6 years, but whatever) and the parking brake wouldn't hold. Took it to a windshield place and they passed it without getting in it.

YEP that is how they do it in texas.......that is the reason for my original question

Inspections.

They vary by state.

I learned the hard way decades ago. In my state they ask for the registration up front. If they find something wrong, the registration card is marked on back. Can't go to a different inspection station as registration is marked.

So . . . now, I always ask for the inspection and do not give them the registration. They still ask. I tell them I will pay for inspection and if something "fails" then I might or might not get it fixed here.

Funny how that works. Since I started that, the "repairs" have dwindled to none - at inspection time.

Granted, I do take care of my truck with a regular local mechanic now, therefore all problems are taken care of ahead of time.

Everyone should find a good local honest mechanic. Difficult to find in some cities/towns. Ask around.

i have the liscense, and really it all depends on the mech mood, deisre to make money etc etc. yes in pretty much any state that stuff will fail a car. leaking brakes and exhaust a huge no no. him tellin u bout the brakes was a favor as that can really mess stuff up. but of course there are always places that never even look

yeah for us truck guys you need to have good connections with a friendly mechanic. Some will let small things like exhaust & tint slide ( unless its a converter related issue ) but most of the time its for the better when they want other stuff replaced. Who knows when it will mess up and how bad it will be down the road.
