Ok, Fellow Members:

After reading a thread from recent days located here ...

http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=48648

I wanted to start a thread and Poll to investigate who has and has not had any problems with the transfercase due to the design flaw with the oil pump wearing the hole in the case.

Please list the year..model....manual or electric 4wd...mileage....

Lets see what happens..... I know my poll is crude but I will adjust ?'s if you got any input to change to make better..

I have an 04 with 120k on it, I don't tow regularly maybe a few times a month but I bought it off one of my good customers who is a regular tower and we never had a leak. I'm a tech way out in the country, everyone has 4wd every other person is a farmer or hobbiest that does a fair amount of towing. I think this thing is common enough for everyone to know about it but not anything as common as you might think. We might see a 5 a year (that would be a big year). If I was even a little scared I would go ahead and update to the clip but I don't think I will unless I'm already going to have the crossmember down for something.

I changed the poll alittle last night and added the 3 selectiions for NO Damage mileage.....there are a few on the mileage that should actually been under no damage....sorry guys I made the adj to the poll with the added selections.

I've got an 01' 2500hd duramax/allison 116,170 and my holes (2) happened on Feb. 10 2008 on the back half cover lower half of the unit. I pull a 27' 3 horse slant 2-3 times a week and 24' Cape Horn boat 3-4 a month during fishing season, and a 16' utility trailer.

'01 Sierra 3500 D-Max/Allison - 255k and counting, no damage. I pull a skid-steer, a 6 horse slant GN, and hual hay on a flat bed, I do one of those at least once a week. The little metal plug in the center of the rear yoke is leaking. I thought it was a hole in the case originally, but looked closely and found no case damage.

I had a 99 K1500 Silverado for 96K, and traded for an '02 K2500 suburban that I traded at 98K. Both vehicles did not have the leak. Currently have an '05 K1500 Work truck and an '08 K2500 Dmax. 45,000 miles and 6,000 miles without transfer case issues. The work truck does have the manual transfercase. I am not sure if the manual t-cases have this issue or not.

99 Suburban 1500, NP246 auto transfercase. Had first issue at 92000 miles. Had the t-case repaired by trans shop. Had a welder that could weld magnesium. Rebuilt t-case and installed updated bushings. Tow a 6-7k lb travel trailer 3-5 per year. Other than that it's a grocery getter.

Now at 102k miles, it's starting to leak at the weld and also looks like the case is splitting at the fill and drain plugs. Looks like I'm going to have to replace the rear case half.

ahhh, the good old pump rub...another one of gm's design flaw's. it mainly happens with the 2500 trucks. there is a clip inside the case that holds the gearator pump,,and it eventually wears out/breaks causing the pump to rub on the case and wear a hole. had it happen on my 04 duramax at about 135,000 km's. the worst part of it is,,it doesn't leak when sitting,,just when moving so it's hard to spot. towing doesn't really have any significance on wether or not it will happen.

my 01 2500hd 8.1/ali with electric t-case has no leaks at 79,000 miles, but my brothers 03 2500hd with8.1/ali and manual t-case did leak and he has around 160,000+ miles on it. he just cleaned it up and put some quick steel over the hole and so far so good.

I have a question about what happens to the truck with t-case problems. What else has happened besides a hole forming in the case? Can the pump move make a driveshaft become unbalanced? I was just wondering because a friends 02 Dmax/Ally goes through U-joints like mad and it also shimmys in the rear. Doesn't matter what kind, brand, strength, etc. We have put a bunch in and to no avail they go bad in under a month. The tires are all balanced and rebalanced and rotated. Also new shocks have been installed. Now my 04 HD does the same. Since I know the t-case is a potential problem with these trucks could it be the culprit? My truck shimmys with new or old tires and stock U-joints and shocks. Any HELP is appreciated.

    • I've installed cheap eBay new aftermarket digitizers before.  They work.  Did a bunch of Cadillac CUE (aka Cadillac's MyLink) for someone years ago.  They all worked fine after the repair.    That number 22740886, that is a component part # for GM.  You can use it to search, but its not something that's obtainable at the dealer level.     So pretty much any of these will work - 2015 Colorado Digitizer for sale | eBay

    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode.
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...
