2002 Fuel Filter Questions?

Recommended Posts

I've heard every 25,000 to 50,000 miles. The state changes them on our patrol cars every 25,000 miles. I think I did mine on my truck at 60,00 miles or so. Just takes a couple of wrenches and a catch can because some fuel will leak when you loosen and remove the old filter. I think it was '04 and up when the filter went to an internal tank style.

James, 25K or so is fine.

You will need a release tool for one end of the filter. The other end is a regular hex nut. This may just be a Flex Fuel vehicle thing because mine is a flex fuel and I had to have the tool. Maybe the non flex fuel has hex nuts on each end.

If it is the OE flex fuel filter, it will have a small "boss" around the end with the quick release and some release tools will not fit past this "boss" area. Lisle makes a release tool that will fit and release the bracket. It is a part # 35000

Not real sure how long it has been but I am sure longer than 25K.

Guess I need to try to slide under it later & take a look at it...if it requires some simple wrenches I will probably do it myself...other wise, I will probably let someone else do it for me. I don't care to buy a tool I will only use once or twice!

Thanks for the link... I guess I need to spend some time looking through the wiki!

I may check into the tool if it is that cheap & I actually need one.

I slid under the truck at lunch & it doesn't have anything special...just the standard nut type!

Am I safe in assuming the line nuts are 17mm like the wiki says?

Should be 13/16 or 3/4 on the filter and 5/8 for the line. Just make sure you put the filter on with the flow side towards the front of the truck, also cycle your key on and off 3 to 4 times before cranking it up.
