Fuel Gauge Showing Incorrect Fuel Level

Recommended Posts

I have a 01' Silverado and I think the Fuel Sending unit is going bad. On a full tank, the gauge will real empty for a while and then will go up to Full and then back down to empty. The only weird thing is the Low Fuel light doesn't come on when the gauge is on empty???

Truck has 100K on it and I'm debating between dropping the tank or moving the truck bed back and buying a complete fuel pump and sending unit or just the sending unit since money is tight right now.(I'm not even sure if they sell just the sending unit, dealer told me no)

Anyone have this problem with their truck and if so, did you drop the tank or remove the bed and where did you get your new sending unit aside from the dealer who wants way more than I can afford.

Thanks for any help

hey fast eddie, i'm not a certified tech but it sounds like you might have a bad gauge cluster gear. i had a similar problem but with the mph gauge, if you do some internet research you will find alot of these model vehicles with similar problems, if you dont find a solution with the fuel tank level sending unit . i can snd you a link to someone on ebay that replaces all gears in the cluster for $118 ish ..depending if you change all gears or not...this to me, is a good deal considering the dealer wants $700+ for a new cluster, it is very easy to remove..let me know what you find out....but i might be wrong all together...depending what your exact gripe is...

Before you replace anything try running a couple of tanks of Techron. The early NBS GM trucks were notorious for corrosion on the sending units caused by sulfur in the fuel. Techron will help clean up the sending unit as well as doing an excellent job of cleaning your fuel injectors.

Mine was doing the same thing drops to empty the low fuel light came on and the chimes, added some fuel injector cleaner no more problems. I add cleaner about every 3 months.

I agree with Indy. Many times Techron will correct the issue. Be sure and get full strength Techron, not just the Fuel Inj cleaner with techron. Run it at 1 oz per gallon.
