5.3l V8 Chevy Oil Capacity Nbs

Hello,

I'm changing the oil myself and have noticed that 6qts. will put the level high on the oil stick. The manual calls for 6qts. but seems to be too much, should I put in 5.5qts. or just go with 6?

No harm in just putting in 6 qts. Go with the owner's manual.

My 2002 5.3L always read high with 6 quarts but I always went with 6 anyway. Never a problem.

I just had my 2008 truck w/ 5.3L oil changed. When I took it in they said it will take 7 Qts. I took their word for it. I am now following up on it because I thought that was high. When I questioned them today they insisted that it took 7 qts and charged me for 7. I said the manual says 6 and read 5.5 is full. They kept insisting it took 7 quarts. My dip stick measures within range. Is that possible or is this major service center screwing me? anybody taken 7 qts?

Put in 6 quarts. Manufacturing processes being what they are, all dip sticks are probably not created equal.

I had questioned this some time ago because my 02 shows above full if I use 6 qts. I got paranoid about this and now fill it until it is full which takes about 5.5 qts.

 

I feel it is likely inconsistency in the dipsticks as Don has pointed out but I just do not want the oil overfilled. The crankshaft "whipping" the oil is not something you want going on in there.
