Whats A Good Deal

I will soon be getting my truck lifted and have talked to many shops around town for pricing and everything. One of my friends has a friend who owns a very reputable shop and wants a website built. I BUILD WEBSITES!!! CHA CHING. Anyway my question is he wants to trade my services for his so whats a good trade. If the kit is 1630 and the install is 500 what should i ask for if the price of a normal website(in my company) is around 900 to 1000 dollars. I guess what im asking is should I ask for money or should I just trade him and pay him 1130 dollars for the lift. Might be a stupid question but im not sure what to do because i dont want to shaft the guy ya know? anyways any help would be appreciated

George,

at least your thinking of his issues. I would think a good trade would be a nominal percentage on the cost of the kit (above his wholesale purchase price) and free labor. You would have to order the kit of you were doing it yourself so try to get a number in your head. Since he will get a continued revenue from the website (I'm assuming your work will get him some business) you should be able to use the future potential to him as a bargaining point. Use these numbers as a starting point. I normally ask the other individual what's fair to them and I go from there.

You are comparing apples to oranges since the majority of your effort is labor and in his case it is inventory but you can get closer by trying to discuss what the actual costs are related to his time and materials. Most of the guys I trade out labor and skills with we try to do on a non-interference basis so that neither of us lose any revenue from opportunity costs. I've also found a case of beer to be a wonderful trade offer.

Best of luck.

Kevin
