My Problem Child...........

Allright guys, I bought a 1984 Suburban a coouple of months ago, and have a couple of issues with it, a quick description, Originally..... 6.2 diesel, 1/2 ton, 4x4, now...... 1995 6.5 diesel with older style stanadyne mechanical injection, 700r4 trans, np208 transfer case, 1983 k30 1-ton diffs.

Here's the problem(s), The 700r4 has a torque converter chatter, this is just with the weight of the vehicle alone!!! depending on load, tailwind, etc... I think this is the problem, but I also had to consider a fuel injector until I managed to get into the throttle without it downshifting, the "chatter" went away, so..... Here I am, throwing myself upon the mercies of the forum, HELP!!!!!!!!!

I need to figure out what's going on, and soon, riding season is starting up, and I need this thing to pull my ATV trailer !!!! Go and have some real fun......

Any help you folks can offer would be greatly appreciated, and I will check back often to answer any questions, I'm usually pretty good with my trucks, but the diesel and 700r4 are previously uncharted territory for me, I wanted a fixer-upper, but I didn't plan on doing it all at once.

Thank you,

Bill.

I'd say change the torque converter...Personally I would change the transmission to a Turbo 400 as that 700r4 would probably break if you wind up the motor enough.

Well, winding it up isn't really an issue, but fuel economy is, this monster is in the 20 mpg bracket, (barely), and I'd really like to keep the o/d for that purpose, , I'm still not exactly sure of what the issue is, and I'm tired of tossing parts at this pig, I've already dumped 2k into this pig just getting the brakes, shocks, tires, and other stuff fixed.

This rig also has a really high rpm in 3rd, which renders it unsuitable for towing on long trips, especially with the way traffic flows down I-5 here, 70+ mph, not gonna happen without a 4th hole.

Try changing the transmission fluid & filter. If that doesn't do it, you may need a rebuild.
