New Green Color Plastic Bearing For Our I-shafts

In an effort to fix my I-shaft clunking noise I bought the new green color bearing to see if that fixes the problem (I have the newest shaft already). After driving the day I put it in I still had clunking, so I went ahead and ordered the Dorman shaft cause I am tired of dealing with this crap.

 

I received the Dorman shaft today and as I replaced it, and checked the movement after installation, lo and behold I still had movement. took it apart under the steering column again and to my surprise the plastic bearing had totally come apart. The cap that holds the ball bearings in place separated from the bearing! So , it is a good thing I kept my OEM white bearing just in case. I put the OEM one back in and connected the new I-shaft, and there is absolutely no play whatsoever.

 

So, just so you all know, be weary of GM's replacement bearing as it is definitely not what I thought it would be. Looking at the design of both you can see why. Wish I could post pics for everyone.

Sorry you had trouble with the green bearing. The green bearing is a very tight fit. I can see were it could get damaged in the replacement.

 

I used a small block of wood to push the bearing in place. This made it easier to get uniform pressure all around the end of the bearing.

 

Any way I have had no issues with mine. Maybe I was just lucky. It is better to be lucky than good.

Yeah, I am still stumped as to how in the world that the bearing came apart. It definitely was a tight fit, though. I may just try and switch it out with a new one at the dealership I bought it from and replace the white one again.

 

Yet, as of now, I have no more clunking (*cross fingers*) I hope this lasts!
