Vette Servo

I talked to Allen at Nelson Perf and he's sending me my corvette servo for the 1-2 shift. I cant wait. Its coming on tuesday. Along with the re tune...I also decided to go with the 93 performance tune...this thing is a beast now I can't wait to see what this will do....one question Allen told me it would take 30 min or so. Anyone done this before and how hard is it to access the servo...is anything in the way?

I'm interested in learning about these transmissions, more specifically, why they're somewhat fragile and what parts fail. This truck is my first automatic. I hate automatics, but that's all you get in these new trucks.

So this billet Corvette servo will firm up the 1-2 shift. Why exactly would you want that, just to make the shift faster? Does this make the clutch packs wear less, or what? Is this more of a performance mod than a "make it tougher and more reliable mod?"

Someone edumacate me on what is the worst part of any automobile, the automatic transmission.

it holds the band 18% tighter and less friction = less heat If your making more power the 60's tend to have a slow or sloppy 1-2 shift...when I take it easy off the line and ease into the throttle it is sloppy. The servo only takes about 30 min to install.

Aren't you at all worried about this mod affecting your tranny warranty? I talked to Vince at FLT about this mod and he suggested I wait until the warranty is up and then do it.

I thought about that and if anything I could always put the old servo in. worst case scenario. Since it help the trans save on friction and stuff I should be ok. With the tune it would be in my benifit to do it. I hear ya though.

In 4 more years, I will be installing servos and maybe a shift kit. I'll worry about those details in 4 years. :shakehead:

Allen told me its easy to install. The one article I read seemed like a PITA

Maybe because Allen is a Master engine builder and has been doing this for years? :shakehead:

Definitely keep us posted. I've heard that the vette servo makes a big difference in the 4L60E. Jeff, I don't think he's running that much more of a risk with his servo than you are with your Nelson tune. Both could potentially void the warranty in the rare case that something bad happens, but both could also be swapped out in the same event. I don't think this is likely though; many people have installed the vette servo in this tranny and I don't think I've ever heard of one problem.

Actually it is easy to install. The hardest part is getting the snap ring back on. I used a big screw driver and a block of wood to get leverage and hold the cover in far enough to get the ring in place. And if it is good enough for GM to put in the Corvette, It is good enough for my truck.

There are billet servos on the market not made by GM that hold the band 50 to 60% tighter and bang into the next gear. Not good in my opinion.

I have been running a Corvette servo and a billet 4th hold servo for over 2 years with no issues. The 4th hold servo works in overdrive. Holds 40% tighter and really helps when towing. Can tow in overdrive with no problem and not over heat.

Just an opinion from someone that has experience with one, :shakehead:

Thanks Don, So you dont need to drop the trans. Do I need new seals? I'll keep you all posted Thanks for the replys

No you do not drop the trans. It is the small round cover on the passenger side. O-rings come with the new servo but it wouldn't hurt to get extras. Sometimes the stock o-ring must be cut to get the servo cover off. You will have to remove the metal heat shield between the cat and the trans. It looks like there is not enough room to get the servo out but it is just enough.

May the force be with you,

Maybe im missing something but ive had 3 (abused) chevy/gm trucks with the 4L60E tranny. 1995 Sierra, 1998 Sonoma, 2000 Silverado. All we high mileage and the trannsmission never gave me any trouble... I may be wrong but i think problems occur when the owner doesnt replace the fluid and filter ever.
