Trailer Harnass Brake Light

I have a 2003 Sierra 2500HD extended cab 4x4 with a 6.0 litre engine. It has a factory installed towing package and I have used it on several occasions with no issue but the last time I connected my utility trailer I could not get both trailer brake lights to work. First I got one side to work and then none. All other lights including signals, park and hazard lights were working fine. I checked voltage at the truck receptical and was not getting anything on the brake light terminals. I took my truck to a local trailer dealer and he checked all connections and fuses and found everything to be as it should. He did tell me that they had experience many 03's with similiar issues which stemmed from the steering column clock spring. After doing some online research I have found several locations where similiar issues have been traced to the hazard light flasher. I am unsure how this comes into play with the brake light issue but surely is a cheaper repair. I was also wondering if it were possible to feed the trailer harnass by connecting into the chasis wiring as was done via a tee connector on older models. Any input on this matter would be appreciated.
