2000 Gmc Sierra Key Won't Turn Ignition

Hey guys, I've been having an intermitant problem with the key in my 2000 GMC Sierra not turn the ignition. I can put the key in 100 times and try to turn it and it won't turn. Then after 20-30 minutes it will all of the sudden turn over. This has nothing to do with the steering wheel being locked in an angle. The problem will happen about every month or so. It's really getting annoying. The last time it happened I was stuck for about 40 minutes jamming the key in and out of the ignition trying to get it to turn. Then all of the sudden it turns. Is this an ignition switch problem or a tumbler issue or something else? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've had that problem before. Take the key and flip it over and try it, or If you have a spare key, try that one. In my case, I found that my key had simply worn out and replacing the key solved the problem.

Good luck

Well I went to the dealer today and had a new key made from the key code. The key is very tight in the cylinder. Will find out shortly if this solves the problem. The guy in the parts dept told me that most people usually end up needing to change out the tumbler cylinder and get new keys cut at the same time. I guess I may end up having to pull change out the cylinder if the new key I had made doesn't do the trick.
