Window Tint

Does anyone know what the factory window tint percentage is on the rear windows of a 2005 Crew Cab rear windows? I want to tint the fronts to match. What is the color of tinting, charcoal, smoke or true grey? I am looking at a precut kit from Snaptint.com. With the installation tools included it is $39.90 w/o shipping. Are these good kits or are there better ones out there? Tips are greatly appreciated.

20% Charcoal (3M tint) matches pretty well. What you have to watch for is different film makers are different colors. Some have a green tint and some are more smoke even thought they call them charcoal. Mots state laws won't let you legally tint the fronts as dark as the rears... but that varies from place to place and some places are stricter on enforcement. I run illegal tint on my trucks and have never been stopped in one of them. In Texas it won't pass annual inspection, so I replace the front tint if I keep a vehicle long enough to need a new sticker. (new cars get a 2 year sticker here).

There isn't one simple answer to your question.

Here in Ohio we must have no less than 50% tint on the front side windows. Now I am a newbie to this whole tinting thing so I would assume that 20% tint allows 20% light through or does it let 80% light through. If it is the later, I would be legal. If it is the former then I am a glutten for punishment. The Ohio Highway Patrol are a tad on the strict side. According to Texas tint laws you are barely illegal in your tinting. It specifies that 25% of light must go through. This is for both front and rear windows. Ohio allows any tinting on side rears and rear windows.

Unfortunately, 20% means 20% light transmission... It's pretty dark stuff. The law here is 35% (or something like that for those who want to split hairs) Sounds like 20% would get you in big time hot water there. 50% doesn't even sound worth having. I bet the factory glass doesn't let in more than 70%.
