New Hid's

Well I posted earlier about how nice I thought those HID's were and while yes the are great, something is already going on with mine. For example the left one will sometimes light up for only 10 seconds or so and then it shuts off...leaving the right one on....and then its happened once that the left one stayed on and the right one shut off....this problem is easily corrected by simply turning the headlights off and then turning them back on....but my question is what gives?? Does it have something to do with the regulated voltage control??? I only notice the problem when the truck sits and idles....not when driving and not when headlights are on with the key off...I was just wondering about the regulated voltage control cause supposedly these HID's are to turn themselves off if it senses a drop in voltage...

Mine have not done this. I did, however, place a small dot of solder between the exposed metal on the plug and the tabs you insert to solidify that connection. You may simply have a bad connection. My buddy had a similar issue to yours and the solder fixed his. I went with it from the get-go. I can't promise anything but you may check the connection. If it were associated with the voltage, you'd think it would happen to both and not just one.

I appreciate the reply, I will give that a try I was kinda wondering if it could be a connection issue....worth a shot....

Also your running the 9005's in the Fog's right?? I think I'll probably go ahead and order the Hi Beams and some for the Fog's also...I am very impressed with this kit....I just do alot of out of town driving and would appreciate the high beam to...I hope it wouldn't be to much for the housing, but I don't think they get that hot anyway....

Also where'd you mount the ballast at for the fogs...I mounted mine for the low beams inside the fender on the right side, and on the radiatior support for the left side...we are running the same kit.

I am running the 9005's in my fogs, yes. I mounted both of the ballasts for the lows on the radiator support, tucked and hidden, very clean. As for the fog ballasts, I mounted them on the piece of tubular steel just above the fog light housing behind the bumper. I used zip ties but also used some wire to ensure that if the zip ties were ever to go that the ballasts would not fall to the ground. There's really no good place to mount them down there with the nut and bolt combo and I didn't want to drill if I didn't have to.

Sounds Good...I'm going to go order some 9005's now....

Don't forget you'll need a set of 9005 harnesses to wire in in place of the stock ones before you get started.

I actually already have them on there...I did your foglight mod not very long after you posted it and have enjoyed it, its just not gunna work with the HID's....I like all the bulbs to match....but thanks for reminding me on that....thats a good side note for anyone else who is reading this and may want to do the mod..

I'm interested in seeing how this turns out. I'd like to throw some inexpensive HIDs in my fogs.

Look at the HID thread in my sig then.

I read it Tobias. What I mean is that I'm interested in seeing if what Travis is experiencing is a simple connection problem or something more serious and an indictment on the quality of the kit.

I'll post when I receive the 9005's...the last ones only took about 3 days to get...so with a little luck maybe I will have them installed by the end of the week. I just have to sit down and modify the bulbs...Tobias, what do you use to modify the bulbs...I used a dremel last time and it seemed to work well, but I was wondering if there might be something better.

I thought you had but it was late. Hopefully this will solve his problem. All the parts are warrantied for 12 months with these kits. I figured what the hell, I paid $80 for my PIAA's, what's the difference?

Dremel here too.

stop talking about HID's in the fogs, i might order another kit and do it  lol i got my low beams on and love em, i installed the wiring harness yesterday day and it's working fine. before the left light had a 4 second shake/flicker, it's gone now :D

HID's in the fogs? Who's talking about HID's in the fogs? That's a good idea though, HID's in the fogs.

Now that I think about it, I think you should think about putting some HID's in your fogs. :D

You can't have too much light!! :D

The end result of my lighting project will be:

HID Highs (already installed)

HID Lows (already installed)

HID Fogs (working on the design, probably using the PIAA conversion mount and some 510's, possibly Hella DynaView Evo)

HID Driving Lights (Hella FF75's on the way. They are only 2.125 inches tall and will fit very nicely in the slot in the bumper.)

However the final edition of all this will be a wiring nightmare, so I will be designing and building my own harness to include everything in one harness. I just ordered a Hella 4-way relay block and a Hella 16-way fuse block that dovetails its way in to the side of the relay block. There will be one 8 gauge source wire from the battery and one 40 amp relay for each lighting subsystem, with each individual lamp fused, and each relay coil activation curcuit also fused. The highs and lows will activate their respective relays via the factory lamp connectors so they will run as normal. The fogs will be activated primarily by a switch on the dash, but will also be set to go off when the highs go off using a diode or two. (I think, that is the current plan, subject to change.) The driving lights will probably work the same as the fogs. I am working on the schematics for this which I will post when done. Coil wiring will probably be 18ga and leads to lamps at least 14ga, maybe 12 if the connectors on the blocks will support that size. Hopefully this will provide the cleanest, safest install with no splices or taps, and a whole lotta' light for my evening trips through SW Miami-Dade as well as a few trips a year through Central Fla.
