I Always Did Like To Start Things

I know this is something of a stupid question at a GM friendly site, but I need some help deciding. Ford or GM? I'm replacing my 9 year old 282,000 miles on original engine and transmission std cab stepside GMC Sierra. It's developed a bit of a whine lately that seems to be coming from the transmission. I have a buyer for the old one, and have been looking at new trucks.

Now, here's my question:

I've had good luck with both GM and Ford. The new trucks don't look that different to me. Ford is apparently getting a little desperate, and they are quite a bit cheaper to buy right now. I saw one F150 crew cab at a dealership with a $32,000 sticker and a $12,000 off tag on it. Throw some arguments my way!

My Chevy is way better built than the Wifes Ford. Hands down, no questions asked, no "if's", "and's" or "but's".

Heck, My '93 Cadillac with 184K miles is in better mechanical condition, than her '03 with 50K.

might be cheaper to buy but more expensive in the long run.

282K on original engine and transmission. Enough said.

+1

I was never exclusively a Ford or Chevy man. I inherited an '86 F150. 100K miles imediately needed about $300 worth of front end work. Drove it 2 years bought a '95 Chevy (because it was cheap) w/171K miles. It has 349K now and I still own it. No major engine or tranny work. I wear out vehicles, so they need to last. Now I am a Chevy man. Love my '07 GMT900.

GM has always had better engines(350 for example), nothing has changed. The 5.3L is a proven performer with little to no problems, and the new Vmax is getting there, but it is just to new to tell. And if your looking for mileage and power, the 5.3 can't be beat.

Oh really? Bring it on!!!:D

Ok Ok and with a very light foot the Vmax can get pretty good milage for a 6.0L

Ford

I prefer the Ford interior to the Chevrolet ; it just seems leaps and bounds beyond general motors. It has a true front axel and a clean cut look to it. I also like how the driver and passanger main downs have that loop in them real cool looking. All f-150's are made in america no canada or mexico importants so you're supporting your country.

On the flip side it has high up keep and until recently shitty brakes that would put off tons of dust. There bodies last forever but there engines throw gap and have a rail system on there spark plugs. Almost everything on them is complicated almost have to take them in for service.

i.e They also have better metal on the new truck than Chevrolet.

Chevrolet

Engines that last forever but often paired with weak trannys that are outdated. They have old push rod type engines thats proven its self over years. They have the eaton locker contract that makes them almost unstoppable in off road situations. They get the best gas mileage in there class. They have higher resale value than Ford or Dodge and for the most part doesn't feel like a woman should be driving it.

I.E best suspension in the truck business

The flip side , weak metal and current models have afm problems. Theres a lot of training wheels on the truck such as torque management and the interior leaves something to be desired not in the term of features but it feels like a tonka toy.

These are just to touch base you're supporting american workers either way. Both are tested to be dependable trucks.

This is personally my first GM vehicle (my dad has always been a chevy guy) and I came from an Acura Integra (back when I 5'6 freshman sophomore year) to a 2004 F150 ex cab that I got side swiped in and had to get rid off because it always rattled after the accident. I traded the 04 for an 05 Lariat F150 Super Crew which was really nice in terms of luxury. However is was the biggest hunk of crap that I have ever owned in my short life as a driver. It went through three transmissions by 54,000 miles, it was soooo slow, and it went to gasoline like it was going out of style. The dealer cut me a great deal because of the problems (I think they just did not want me to lemon law it) so I traded it in for an 07 Expedition (I know I know) for my mother. I think Fords LOOK NICE but thats about it, they really left a bad taste in my mouth.

This 2007 NBS Sierra is my first GM...

I owned a 1991 F150, a 99 F250SD, an 03 F250SD and 05 Explorer V8... oh yeah, forgot in the middle somewhere was an '02 F150.

My observations:

'91 F150: tank... put 160,000 trouble free miles on it. Had no clue what a service bay looked like. AC could allow you to age beef in the cab. 302 V8, routinely got 15mpg city with flowmaster and K&N. 1st mechanical failure was the starter around 125,000 miles. Still miss it.

'99 F250SD: Nice truck, 5.4l gas, sucked fuel like there was no tomorrow, put 45,000 RELATIVE trouble free miles on it. Had a habit of having "no starts" every now and then. Towed back to dealer twice. SOme "little stuff" warranty work.

'02 F150: Decent enough truck I guess... hated it though. Felt like I was sitting in a hugo. Very small, IMHO, for something being touted as a FS truck. Miserable paint, rail dust, sucked gas like there was no tomorrow (5.4 gas). Ford VERY resistant wrt warranty repairs. Paint issues verified by district rep. STILL didn't want to fix it. Deduced, wrongfully, that this truck was a fluke (I thought: it happens) --- gave up and got ford to give me advantageous trade-in, which they DID, to their credit.

'03 F250 SD (2WD): First truck I ever ordered fresh, just the way I liked it. 5.4 gas. Danced a jig when it got 12 mpg. Actually clocked 15mpg on a highway trip, ONCE. AC terrible.. had LOTS of "little excrement" stuff go wrong. Back for warranty work at least 4x in first year. Had notorious "front-end-wobble" under hard braking. Ford denied any knowledge of problem (although forums were reporting this issue right-and-left, and I believe still do). Had one no-start issue, towed back to dealer for that. Put 39,000 on it.

'05 Explorer (4.6V8) with AdvanceTrac and RSC: Absolute tank in the snow and inclement driving conditions. Impossible to get it stuck. Had auxillary cooling (AC) system. AC terrible. Couldn't cool interior 20 deg cooler than outside with 20 miles of highway driving. Ford said "normal". Best mpg: about 14 on a good day. Leaked water thru roof liner first week---and not just a little. Rear hatch glass leaked water... never really fixed (2x attempts). Radio a joke (had highest end factory offered). For a V8, felt like you were towing a trailer when you weren't --- A toy Corolla could embarass you at a light. 7 Warranty visits first year of ownership.

Got tired of SUV and FORD.... decided to give GM a shot (with a FS truck again)

Got '07 Sierra 5.4 extended cab (picture below)

9000 on the clock.

Warranty repairs: 0

Comfort: 10/10

Fit/FInish: Best in industry IMHO

Factory Stereo (single CD/MP3 with XM): for a 40 something year old f__t like me: awesome. Sounds 100% better than ANY factory radio I have ever owned.

AC: Ice cold.... LOVE IT

Ride: Unbeievable... like a caddy on the highway.

Stiff frame and good handling for FS truck. Quiet inside.

GM made a believer out of me with this truck. Sorry I didn't take the plunge sooner.

Average mpg so far: 14.5 city/suburban, I've gotten 19 on the highway at 65, 18 cruising at 80.

Engine performance (out of the box): above average... you KNEW there was a V8 inder there.

Engine Performance (tuned): Evil.

Got 0% financing.

Deailer experience compared to Ford: My dealer is top notch (although, I know this can be very situational)

Ford dealers (last 3 I dealt with: USELESS)

Summary:

Ford lost a long-time faithful customer. I don't think they care. Sorry I didn't take the plunge sooner. Probably should have, but I am glad the timing got me in a NBS. I find the styling awesome.......

Get MORE unsolicited "that's a GREAT looking truck" in one week with this one than I ever have with any ford (although that wasn't a purchase criteria).

Just my $0.05

Gentlemen,

I know Fords are better now than 10 years ago but my last 3

fords were hobbies. Lots of leaks and crappy brakes. My Acura RL has bigger front brakes than my Ford E 350 motorhome and those brakes get stinky hot on any descent even with gentle use and engine braking.

Chevy engineers seem to design with the thought that any truck will be overloaded at some point and still needs to be stopped. I love good brakes and Chevy has never disappointed. My 5.3 Silvy gets 18 - 19 mpg and I squeak tires at least once a day. No oil leaks at 140,000 miles and starts with a touch of the key. Quality dino oil and cheapest gas I can find. Just damn sweet trucks.

But like I said earlier, I know Fords are better now but I have been burnt more than once and Chevy has never disappointed.

Ken
