Nbs Owners...should We Be Nervous ?

Last week, at the dealership, I was performing a PDI (pre-delivery inspection) on a 2008 Sierra 2500 series, with a D-Max / Allison combo.

I was just about to pull it out of the shop, when a co-worker came up to B.S. for a minute. "Watch this..." I told him.

I shut the hood, then wiggled my hand THRU the factory grille, and opened the hood. All within 2-3 seconds.

My friend's jaw dropped when he saw how easy it was to open the hood on these NBS trucks.

"Nothing like GM stepping up security" is what I said. He walked away, shaking his head in amazement.

Now, I haven't tried this on Chevy trucks, but this is crappola. A person could EASILY pop the hood on ANY NBS Sierra, and start taking whatever they wanted to. And us GMC owners are asleep in bed, thinking everything is locked-up for the night.

Of course, those owners with aftermarket grilles shouldn't have to be concerned...but what about us guys that keep the truck fairly stock??

Go outside, and peek thru your grille. You can easily see the latch and cable release...right in front of you...

I worked a gauge a few years back, and every once in awhile a vehicle would have a broken cable. We could usually stick our arms up behind the front cover and release the hood. Sometimes you needed a screwdriver due to lack of room, but this is nothing new.

My last truck had door handles but that didn't stop the thieves from taking a pry bar to them an opening the door to steal my stuff.

My point is that if someone wants what's under your hood, they'll get under your hood.

Personally, I'd have preferred the thieves to have gone through my rear windows that was unlocked and half-open but they chose another route.

What's worse, really, having your grill mangled to get to what's underneath or having them just pop the damn thing and take what they wanted without damaging your truck's exterior?

If your alarm goes off either way, I'd be fine with it going off with no actual damage already done to the vehicle.

I've found that if you take a piece of pipe... say about 18 inches in length... and blast out the driver's door glass... most any car can have the hood open in mere seconds.

I can't believe anybody would give this a second thought. Just how secure do you think your HOOD needs to be?

My old '68 Camaro had a hood latch that was hidden better than my '08 Sierra.

The point is not about being a stupid butcher and blasting out truck windows.

The point is about how "easy, and out in the open" this part of the truck really is...

And GMC claims "...we overlooked nothing..."
