06 Gmc Sierra Still In The Game?

Recommended Posts

I am considering purchasing a red 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab SLE 4x4 5.3 V8. The truck has only 1280 miles and has a 6 inch lift, new rims/tires/tow package, exhaust already done to it (dealer states $8k of extras). Its got everything that I want in truck and I still love the body styling of the 06's. The KB is 27k without options and the dealer is asking 31k + tax/license fees.

My question: Do you think I should be able to bring the dealer down in price? Even though the miles are low, its still the older model, 2yrs old after I drive it off the lot and its only about 3 or 4k less than a new truck of the same calibre (of course without all the extras).

And because it seem like in the news all the dealerships are low on sales and hurting that they should be giving a better deal. Any ideas on what would be a fair price? I was thinking $28k would be fair...

Are the new trucks alot better than the previous 2006 version?

Well, I'm down to my last hour befire the test drive. I will not make a hasty decision though and planning on more research.

Bottom line, do you think the dealer can come down further or do you think the asking price (quoted by email 31,660.36) is still too high? Understanding all the extras, but once you drive it off, they are all worth $0...not that I plan to piece sell it! :)

btw, rear gearing is 4:10....

Is KBB retail 27? If so, id only pay 27. If its private party or so, id maybe swing for 29. That truck brand new with 0 miles on it was maybe 27-28K.

Yah the KBB is 27, but with all the options installed it goes back up to 34. They said they wouldnt go below 31, but if I wait I may get them to cough it up for 29 OTD. I know the tax and fees always seems to bump it up sev thousand more..:)

I don't know Dan, 30K dollars for a non-diesel GMT800? I looked at the the truck, and even considering everything (the low miles, add-ons, etc.) I'm not sure I would do it. You've definitely ruled out a new truck, like an '07 or '08?

Yeah really. How did it end up at the d'ship with 1280 miles? The first owner takes the depreciation hit, 20% or so when you drive it off the lot. Forget the lift kit and other add-ons, the dealer didn't pay for that and most dealers, when taking a lifted truck on a trade, will say things to the trader like "you've voided your warranty" or "I could only sell that to a kid". So, play some hardball. Offer him 27k out the door and make him squirm. Ga-ron-teed the dealer did not add extra to the trade for that.

In October of 06 you could have bought a brand new Z71 SLE in Canada of all places for $35k with zero per cent, plus factory incentives. Stick to your guns and more importantly stick it to the dealer. He needs to move that thing.

WOW Guys! That is alot of information you have found on it. Well, I took the test drive and it rides like a lifted truck...this was my first ride in one that has been lifted 6 inches. Even though the ride was rougher than I anticipated due to the nobby tires, I loved it! (I tried to make it not show in front of the dealer though).

Basically I found out from the dealer that the original owner put the fabtech lift kit on, the "DRIV" 20's with Toyo tires, the gibson exhaust system, the nerf bars, x-liner, corrected the steering ratio to compensate for the lift and the 4:10 gearing in the rear. After he did all this, he brought the truck in at 1258 miles and traded it in for an Avalanche.

The reason the dealer said they wouldnt budge on the price of $31660.36 is because they gave too much for the trade in due to all the extras and they would only be making $600.00 on the sale...$150.00 to salesman and $450.00 for the paperwork, clean-up fees. Plus here in California Tax & license fees are 10% of the sales price - so that would be about $3500 extra!

I looked at the new GMC trucks which I think only look good lifted (which my wife likes better), but to get anything near the extras, I would have to pay out he nose. After rims/tires/lift kit at the very least would be abut 5k more.

So after the test drive, I told them that I would have to think about the truck some more before I sold my soul. I even through out "what about the asking price OTD?" They said no. Do they make the new 07/08 trucks in the same red? If so, I may just wait till they do and buy one then...

Oh, and regarding the warranty on the lift/transmission etc...apparently is now has a dealer warranty good for 1k miles on everything.....So what happened to the original warranty? My buddy just bought an 06 extended cab with 23k miles and they made him pay 3500 for a 100k mile warranty or 5 yrs..which he said only bumped up his payment about 5 dollars a month.

I don't know, I think I may just wait till the people who bought 07's start turning them back in....I just really want the red color! (Not burgundy)

Nope, don't buy it. That truck is not worth it. You can have all that done on a slightly used truck, install all the goodies, and come out ahead. Heck, You can get a 2008 Crew Cab LT1, for about 27,000 crew cab, and install all those goodies, get the paint you want on it for about $33,000 +- a few thousand dollars. Plus, you get the bragging rights on building an awesome truck.

Also, the dealer is bullshitting you. They did not pay too much for the truck. The most they paid for it was $27,000. They are not stupid. They play the guy that braught it back, and they try to play the potential buyers. They know they will find a buyer eventually. They are trying to get as much for the "show ready truck" as they can.

I agree. It's the same old song and dance of the dealerships. Just walk away and see what happens. They will eventually find a "sucker" to pay what they want. Shoot, when I bought mine new, the sticker was almost $30K but I talked them down to $24,500 after it was all said and done. They figured they would get some of that back with their financing but I pulled another one and was already pre-approved through my bank. When the salesman said they could beat the percentage rate, I told them they were nuts (I got 0.5% APR from my bank) and they just took one in the rear and walked away. Believe me, they got their money back on the next guy that didn't do the research as you have done. Stick to your guns and go with your gut. For that price, as many have said, you can buy one brand new AND do all the things you want to do with it when you want to. Although it is a very nice looking rig, I would run away! I am always a little leery when I see trucks like this for sale so soon after work has been done. Some people do it right while others just slap it together and sell off the soon-to-be lemon to someone else. Buy the new rig and get that nice warranty! The mods will come in time.
