Onstar - Att?

Is it possible to put onstar's phone onto my ATT cellphone family plan? I know it will work with Verizon.

Nope. Onstar uses CDMA. AT&T uses GSM. The 2 technologies just aren't compatible. But you would think it could technically work with Sprint, but they won't do that. Sure it's a contract thing.

With Onstar, it's Verizon or nothin'.

Onstar uses AMPS (advanced mobile phone service which is an AT&T /Verizon conglomaration) as the primary carrier and CDMA as the secondary. However AT&T considers it to be two different services and will not allow you to share minutes. I have asked this question of AT&T and it seems to be a contractual agreement between Verizon, AT&T, and Onstar.

I pay an extra $10 per month on my verizon bill to have my truck as a second phone line. The minutes are shared between my truck and my handheld cell phone.

Just FYI.

I actually considered switching to Verizon/Onstar just for the hands-free phone service awhile ago. But Sprint lowered my bill even more and I didn't feel like paying the extra $$$ for Onstar minutes. But I'm sorta curious what Onstar is going to do when GM starts offering Bluetooth in all of their vehicles fairly soon. I don't see the non-Verizon customers sticking around just to pay $40 for 100 minutes + the monthly service fee. At the very least, they'd ditch the expensive phone package.

Perhaps they'll lower prices or "find a way" to open their network to other service providers ?

I half thought of activiating my onstar....i bought a blue tooth adapter instead, it works with my factory radio..... just as good, ad no montly charge.

Can you give a little more details on this bluetooth adapter for the factory radio. I'm interested.

I know you can do that I said

Best thing to do imho is to find out if the emergency button is still enabled once you cancel your service with Onstar or how do they shed themselves of the responsibility of calling for help if you have an airbag or emergency on the road then work around it, then buy an in car repeater for you current cell phone with a bluetooth portal that will allow your phone to connect while still on your side but allow you to talk to the remote microphone on the visor or in your ear.

I have a fully integrated bluetooth kit on mine (Navigation HU). It uses the GMX-320 lockpick along with the Raytel bluetooth kit to send video to the screen and audio over the factory radio. I'm not sure how the interface for the audio part works but the Onstar indicator on the radio comes on when I use the phone with this kit. Scoshe and Coastal are both supposed to have video kits coming out that are compatible with the GMX-320 and Nav radios like the Raytel kit. If you don't have Nav you can still use a Parrot (or other non-video output) bluetooth kit and have it hooked up to use the factory speakers but I don't know what other adaptors you might need to do this.

Ah, I see what you mean, I misunderstood your comment.

How do you go about activating the onstar phone. I already have verizon. Thanks

Just call Verizon and tell them what you want to do. They will hook you up.
