"tinney" Sound At Tailpipe When Cold

Recommended Posts

As per the title I hear this sound with the engine cold on my 5.3l 02 Yukon. Sounds like it is coming directly out the tailpipe. Holding my foot against the pipe offers up no change.

Loose exhaust or a engine noise?!?! making its way that far?\

The cold mixture is richer causing more "explosions" in the exhaust system than when the engine is warm, because more unburned fuel is making its way into the exhaust system. This is normal.

I should have added that it has a very consistant beat to it.

Yeah that would be consistent with the richer mixture when cold. Don't worry about it.

Pretty embarassing though. Between the 5.3 "Diesel" for a minute or so when cold, AND the sound out the back... Time to start wearing my work hearing protection.

Thanks

I have a Corsa. You should hear it when it's cold! Sounds like a B-29

Yeah, maybe get some James Bond like "Flip plates" saying "Yes, it's a diesel" for when cold, and of course, flip them to normal after warmup. Might be a nice touch here in Hamilton, Ont.

It could be a bad joint inside the muffler, once it heats up the metal expands a little and it goes away. My truck makes all kinds of great noises when it's cold, I call it character. Turn the stereo up.

I already have learned the turning up of the stereo thing when cold. Problem for me is that I just bought this truck last Sept. Some that I know are still checking it out. Again, embarrassing.

Maybe headers and true duals? :)
