Inspection Cover Question

This is probably a very basic question. The instructions in the Chilton manual are a little ambigous, so I thought I would double check here. I had to have some work done the 8.5" 10 bolt rear differential in our recently purchased 92 K1500. The left axle seal was leaking. On inspection, the end of the axle tube had a bump in it, like someone hit it with something when they replaced the last seal. A local shop, straightened it up, cleaned and inspected the differential. The wife picked it up for me, and of course they didn't give her any instructions. I did find a tube of RTV that one of the guys that loaded it into the SUV must have left there. The counter guy that I spoke to on the phone said that there would be a gasket under the inspection cover. My question is where to use the RTV? The Chilton manual seemed to indicate that it only went on the differential housing, then the gasket then the cover. Does that sound right, or did I miss something?

Thanks,

Daris
