Sunroof Noise On Gmt900 Trucks

Hey fellas. A quick question for those of you with sunroofs (or moonroofs...I'm not sure of the difference) on the GMT900 trucks. Does anyone else notice noise around the sunroof area when the roof is closed? Whenever I hit a bump (even a small one) the sunroof makes a noise. It's not too loud; in fact, I usually don't hear it when the radio is on. It is annoying enough though that I had it in to the dealership for this problem once already. They adjusted the sunroof "out" (the body shop guy's words) as far as it would go, but the noise remains. The fact that the noise happens only when I hit a bump leads me to believe that the noise occurs as a result of chassis flex, and not the wind. Any input would be appreciated

What type of noise is it , Will? Like a "thump"? I haven't noticed it with mine, but my OCD will surely kick in now, thanks

Mine is perfectly silent. My passenger side seatbelt makes a little squeak at the upper attachment point that I need to grease though. For the longest time I thought it was the sunroof, then I reached over one day and grabbed the seatbelt on Orchard Lake Road, West Bloomfield, MI - the worst stretch of public road on the planet - great place to find squeaks and banish them!

wind maker come to pa ill show you a even worse road i bet it ate my friends car in one of the pot holes lol .

 

my nabors nbs dose the same thing but with his i looked up when rideing with him and his sun roof seemed to bounce as in the glass moved

It's like a dull "squeak" sound, Scott. That's why I think it's friction-based (i.e., two surfaces coming in to contact with one another). I think my sunroof is moving too, Ross, but thankfully I wouldn't describe it as "bouncing." It's not that severe.

I listened to mine all the way home, roads are pretty crappy right now. I didn't hear anything. Keep us posted

I hear a 'rattle' or something in the roof of the truck, if I have the sunroof cover / shade open and I hit a bump. I can close the shade and the sound goes away. Heck, sometimes just closing and reopening the sunroof shade silences the noise. Other than that, no noises with mine.

Well on one hand I'm glad you guys are squeak free, but on the other, I'm hoping to find some other people with the same problem

1. Open the sunshade.
   
2. Close the sunroof window.
   
   
   
3. Loosen the adjusting screws on each side of the sunroof window.

   • Crew Cab has two screws.

    

    

   • Extended Cab has three screws.

    

   
   

4. Adjust the corners of the window panel using the following guidelines:

   • Adjust the front of the sunroof window flush to 2 mm (0.08 in) below the top surface of the roof panel.

    

    

   • Adjust the rear of the sunroof window flush to 2 mm (0.08 in) above the top surface of the roof panel.

    

   Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
    
   

5. Install the sunroof window adjustment screws.Tighten
   Tighten the screws to 4 N·m (35 lb in).
    
   

   • Crew Cab has two screws.

    

    

   • Extended Cab has three screws.

Removal Procedure

 

1. Place the module in the closed/flush position.
   
2. Remove the sunroof window. Sunroof Window Replacement .
   
3. It is only necessary to lower the headliner. Only do those step in headliner replacement that will lower the headliner enough to gain access to the part. Refer to Headlining Trim Panel Replacement .
   
4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the motor/actuator.
   
5. Remove the motor/actuator. Refer to Sunroof Motor/Actuator Replacement .
   
   
   
6. Push the cam assembly (2) forward until the timing hole (3) in the cam is aligned with the timing hole (4) in the lifter arm (1).
   
   
   
7. Insert a pin (1) in the holes to hold the position while installing the drive motor.Important: Both mechanisms should now be in the closed position.
    
   
8. Repeat this procedure for the opposite side.
   

Installation Procedure

 

1. 
   Notice: Refer to

Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
 
Install the sunroof window. Refer to Sunroof Window Replacement .Tighten
Tighten the screws to 4 N·m (35 lb in).
 
Install the motor/actuator. Refer to Sunroof Motor/Actuator Replacement .Tighten
Tighten the motor attachment screws to 3.5 N·m (31 lb in).
 
Connect the electrical connector to the motor/actuator.


Remove the pin (1) from the holes that held the position while installing the drive motor.
Install the headliner. Refer to Headlining Trim Panel Replacement .
Perform the Initialization/Teach Procedure. Refer to Sunroof Motor/Actuator Initialization/Teach Process .
Verify the operation of the sunroof.

Sunroof Panel/Window Garnish Molding Assembly

 

Tip

1. Tilt molding approximately 45 degrees with rear end up.
   
2. Push molding rearward to sandwich headliner and sunroof tub between molding flange and tabs.
   
3. Grab front of molding at centerline and pull rearward approximately 1 inch.
   
4. Push front edge up, locking front tabs in place.
   
5. Push up on outboard edges of molding to secure.
   
6. After molding is secured, slide the molding forward until it stops.

Caution: Do not attempt to repair or alter the head impact energy-absorbing material glued to the headliner or to the garnish trims. If the material is damaged, replace the headliner and/or the garnish trim. Failure to do so could result in personal injury.

 

Notice: Use care when working around the head curtain inflator module. Sharp tools may puncture the curtain airbag. If the head curtain inflator module is damaged in any way, it must be replaced.

 

Notice: If a vehicle is equipped with a head curtain inflator module ensure that the inflator module and tether are undamaged. If tether or curtain airbag are damaged in any way, they must be replaced.

 

 

Preliminary Procedures

1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling .
   
2. Remove the windshield garnish moldings. Refer to Windshield Pillar Garnish Molding Replacement .
   
3. Remove the sunshade assemblies. Refer to Sunshade Replacement .
   
4. Remove the roof console assembly. Refer to Roof Console Replacement .
   
5. Remove the roof rail assist handles. Refer to Roof Rail Rear Assist Handle Replacement .
   
6. Remove the center pillar upper molding. Refer to Center Pillar Upper Garnish Molding Replacement .
   
7. Remove the body lock pillar trim panels. Refer to Body Lock Pillar Trim Replacement .
   
8. Remove the sunroof finishing lace, if equipped. Refer to Sunroof Opening Trim Finish Lace Replacement .
   
9. Remove the dome lamp, if equipped. Refer to Dome Lamp Replacement .
   
10. Remove the second seat overhead console, if equipped. Refer to Roof Rear Console Replacement .
    
11. Remove the coat hook , if equipped. Refer to Coat Hook Replacement .
    
12. Remove the front seat bucket . Refer to Front Seat Replacement - Bucket .
    
13. Remove the front floor console. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement .
    
14. Remove the rear seat. Refer to Rear Seat Replacement .

Headliner Trim Panel Assembly

 

 

Procedure

1. Prior to removal, note the routing of the wire harness to aid in reassembly and to ensure proper installation.
   
2. Disconnect the electrical connector.
   
3. With the aid of an assistant bend the headliner slightly through the left rear door.
   
4. The headliner rear edge will go through lower rear corner of the door opening first with interior headliner side facing the front of vehicle.
   
5. Side edges of the headliner may be slightly scuffed during installation and will be covered by the upper garnish trim when it's installed.

well they did my entire headliner (had to take out the windshield and rear window to remove the once piece molding) as my headliner was 'sagging'.....that was no fun either
