Add Factory Navigation To Non-bose 2008 Silverado

I'm new to the forums and just bought a 2008 extended cab Silverado LT2 with the standard HU and have a few questions about adding the factory nav HU to my non-Bose truck.

I know I'll need the following:

-Nav HU (which part# will allow me to play DVDs through the nav screen itself) - any good deals out there for this?

-PAC 1416 harness from JPCustoms

-VSS Harness

-Nav Disc

-GPS antenna

-Tech II programming for the HU

I'll also need an amp and that's where my questions come in....and I'm a novice to car audio.

What type of amp should I get if I want to keep the factory speakers? Also, where do I run the power lead for the amp to under the hood? (Where specifically on the distribution block?)

Where should I pass the power lead through the firewall...are there any good existing grommets to work with? Anybody have pictures?

Where's a good location to mount the amp....would under the front of the center console work?

Also, I realize that the PAC adapter will give me RCAs to run to the amp....is there some way to use a factory harness to connect the speakers to the amp? I would rather not cut up any factory wires to make this happen?

Thanks for any help you can lend! I hope to hear from some folks who've done exactly what I'm planning to do.

If the PAC unit retains Onstar, door chimes, turn signal sounds, and other warning beeps, good. If not, you should get such a device. The factory speakers probably won't hold up long to an amp. So, you might as well pop for new ones, because it won't be long.

A 4x50 amp would suit, but won't give you much for expansion, like subs. Power lead should run directly to the battery with a fuse.

My factory speaker wiring is intact, just unplugged at the speakers. You are best to run new wiring from the amp to the speakers.

I'm no expert, that's why I had a system installed.

-nav unit

-nav disc (have to order one from GM, DONT BUY USED, IT WONT WORK!!!!)

-VSS adaptor (http://www.jpcustoms.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=17812&cat=359&page=1)

-amp interface (http://www.jpcustoms.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=17615&cat=307&page=1) - so you dont have to cut up factory wiring harness!!!!

-4 channel amp of your choice (i went with an alpine MRP-F420) - and of course all the wiring you need

hmmmm...that should be it. install the amp (i did it behind the back of the rear seat). run the speaker wires from the amp to your factory speakers. install the NAV unit and the VSS wire kit. go to the dealership and get it programmed. you are all set!!!! not really that complicated, i promise

Awesome, thanks for the information! Could you tell me which model # nav unit you purchased? Does it really matter? Also, where did you run the power lead for the amp through the firewall?

i used the pac interface for my 08 to add a amp. I have it under the driver side seat. THe power wire to run thru the firewall, drill a hole near the factory oem one. Be sure to run a housing piece to feed the power wire to, or use 3m rubber on it.
