How To Remove Axle Shafts?

ok, I may sound dumb, but can I remove the axle shafts without removing the carrier (ring gear)?

 

I thought it was just "C" clips that hold the spder gears to the axle that hold it in?

 

this is on a gm 8.6" 10 bolt.

yes thats right, take the pin out the middle, push the shafts in a bit to get the clips off and then pull out. sometimes can be a pain, they dont always wanna cooperate
