What Would It Take And Is It Even Possible

as the title says, is it possible to change out the 4.10 gears i have for the 3.73 in an 05 2500 4X4. if it is how hard is it and what would it cost?

i'm fairly mechanically inclined so i have no problem doing the work myslef assuming there isn't something major i don't know about?

i tow a boat and 4 place enclosed sled trailer so i don't think i would want to go to the 3.55. but i just don't need the 4.10. trying to look for things to help the mpg. (i know, i know, its a full size 3/4 ton truck). also going to try one of the custom pcm tunes. just have to figure out which one. thanks.

I don't think changing gears is the way to go, particularly if you tow alot. But changing them isn't a big deal, but don't try it yourself if you've never done it. There's alot more to it than unbolting old gears/pinions and bolting new ones on. Gear sets can be had for right around $500, and plan on it costing $500-$900 for install. Shop around, the prices will vary GREATLY. If it's not done properly, you can "grenade" the differential, which usually winds up in total replacement of carrier (and/or locker), gears, bearings and sometimes axles. There's alot to it to get it shimmed properly.

good to know, thanks for the info.

Your cost will be well north of $1000 to do this swap. I think you might even have trouble seeing much gain, with that 8.1. Mark.

Considering the fact that you actually use the truck for towing, I'm not sure the very minor gains in mpg would justify the cost or reduction in towing performance.

From what I've read, the 3.73 will only net you about an extra 1-1.5 mpg for highway driving. If you are towing, the lower gears could actually cost you mpg if the truck is shifting more.

I am not sure what tires you are running now, but going from 245s to 285s will get you down to a "gear" of 3.83 from 4.10. That's the easiest and cheapest "gear swap" you can do.

From 4.10 to 3.73 isn't a very big difference - not worth the effort.

However, if you really want to do it cheaply then find someone with 3.73's to trade with.

thanks for all the info and opinions. yeah, i doubt the cost of changing the gears would we worth it. it would take a long time if ever, to recover the cost. it was just a thought. i am planning on getting a custom tune. and right now (they were on it when i bought it) i have 305/50/20 for tires. i would think this would have a pretty big negative effect. yes they reduce the gear ratio but the are heavy sob's. but damn do they look nice! it will be interesting in the winter when i run my 245's and see what the difference will be if any. and i do believe the speedo has been recalibrated as my speeds seem to match and are reasonable, and i haven't been pulled over yet. i was kinda, hoping it hadn't, that would make a big difference in mpg. i am planning on getting a mild tune to see if it bumps mpg a little, just haven't figured out which one yet. it would just be nice to see 13-14mpg rather than 10, but i did buy the 8.1 and i knew what i was getting when i got it. thanks again

you aren't gonna get that with the 6.0l either. to me a good tow vehicle gets similar milage when towing or solo. how good is your tow vehicle if it gets 14 solo and 7 towing. i'g rather get 12 solo and 11 towing. my gas guzzler 98 gmc gets 10 towing a 48 foot fifthwheel at 68 mph or 2900 rpms. let it holla. a diesel is a little different

    • Brought my 2015 Colorado into the dealership to check my touch screen issues, had that ghost touch thing happening. They said I needed a new touch screen and they could either order me one for $500. The lady at the service deck was nice enough to tell me I could order a touch screen online for less, she did stipulate that the touch screen had to be factory OEM, you can't pair an aftermarket screen to my radio seeing it was 2015, it had to be a GM factory OEM only. I found a few on Amazon and Ebay by the numbers on the back of the old screen, DJ080PA-01A GM# 22740886, Some said "OEM" in the description and others just said "Replacement". Would a replacement be the same as a OEM as long as it had the same numbers on the back of the screen? In some of the descriptions they also show different brand names but same numbers, is that an issue?
    • I have both but typically use the 4 legged walker (wheels on front, ski's on back).   The four wheeler is starting to be used on "longer" outdoor walks.  The 4 legged walker is particularly helpful in practicing good walking posture.  Both of my knees are at different stages of recovery and I'm trying to not develop poor habits.  I can actually manage with a cane but it's very difficult not to favor one leg over the other.  My PT recommends I continue with my 4 legged walker for a while.  Yesterday was four weeks since my last knee replacement and I'm excited about my progress to date.  It has been a hell of a rough journey so far but it is exciting to witness  systematic and continuous improvement.  I went for years watching the decline of my "mobility".  It seems that everyday now I am alerting my wife to something I can do now that I couldn't a day or two ago!  I encourage anyone facing the prospect of knee replacement to share any concerns with others who have had the surgery.  It isn't an instant fix but rather is a considerable amount of short term pain for long term gain.  Recovery time and pain levels vary for individuals post surgery but the end results are typically very positive and I've never encountered anyone regretting having had the surgery.
    • The lifter issue can be dealt with by shorter oil changes and quality oil IMO.
    • Got heavy rain, hail and light rain yesterday.
    • I'm putting in an A-pillar pod/gauges, and I'm asking if anybody can identify a (preferably) fuse for a switched power and illumination circuit on the driver's side interior fuse panel. Offhand, everything I checked with a test light was constant-hot, and I'd much rather uses a piggyback fuse. I can certainly find a wire, but I'd rather not half-tap.   Thanks in advance for any help.
