Problem With Back-up Light On Trailer Electrical Socket

I was towing my boat yesterday and when I put the truck (2007 GMT900, LTZ) I couldn't reverse because the trailer brakes kept locking. They guy at the boatyard tested the trailer as well as the connector and they tested fine - as did the fuse. So somewhere I have a problem where I am not getting juice to that part of the socket that controls back-up light (and therefore my trailer brake release). The running lights, turn signals and brake lights on the trailer all work fine.

Get someone you trust and an electrical meter. Take the meter and ground out the negative end and place the positive end to the pin in the center of the 7 way socket on your truck.

 

While doing that have someone put it in reverse, with their foot on the brake, (Well the guy on the internet who told me how to do this didn't say anythign about brakes) if the meter says your getting juice then you know you got juice in the truck. You definitely want to test the truck before you go tearing it apart looking for somehting that may not be a problem.

 

Could it be the backup solenoid on your trailer? If it were to malfunction it could have the same effect as not getting power.

doesn't your boat trailer have hydraulic surge brakes?

I have never seen electric brakes on a boat trailer. :lol:

 

Yup - they are hydraulic surge brakes but in order to go in reverse you need an electrical charge to disable the braking surge coupler (or whatever it's called) or else the action of driving in reverse will actually lock up the brakes...

Yes - I did this at the boat yard and that's how I know I am not getting juice to the back-up pin on the 7 way socket. I AM getting juice to all the other 6 pins...so now I'm wondering if this is something I can do myself or if I'm better off having Chevy do it...

Your truck is under warranty so if it is convenient, you should take it to your dealer and let them track down the problem.

 

If you want to do it yourself, you will have to trace the reverse wire backwards to it's power source to see where you do have power and where you are losing it. It could be a bad connector somewhere along the line.

 

On a side note - do your back up lights work? I was just wondering because the reverse power for the socket could be coming from the same switch/relay as the back up lights. Just a thought.

That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts.
