Odd Issues On A New Sierra

Recommended Posts

Posted

So, my parents just bought a used 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT with the VortecMax engine and the Max Trailering Pack. 13500 miles and under $30,000 so not a bad deal.

Just a couple of strange little issues we've noticed that I hoped someone else might have seen as well.

First, this truck has the in-dash navigation system. It works fine, but we notice that when the truck is off, you can hear the drive, not sure if it's the DVD drive or the drive behind the screen, making a noise like it's trying to search the disc. It does this regardless of whether there is a cd in the drive or not, but I've never checked the drive behind the screen.

Second, this has only happened once, this morning, and my mom was the only one in it to hear it, and we havent' been able to reproduce it. She says that while she was driving it today, she started hearing a 'popping' noise which she described as like a 'popcorn maker' whenever the vehicle was in motion, and was accompanied by a strong smell of antifreeze. She said it sounded like it was in the front right area of the truck, so it sounds like an issue with the axle or something. All the gauges read fine, and I didn't notice anything when I drove it when she got home.

Third, and this one is probably something simple like a clog, but we noticed last night that the front windshield defogger doesn't seem to operate on the passenger side. There is air blowing, but not nearly as strongly as the driver side.

Some customers may comment that there is unusual or unwanted noise coming from the navigation radio. This noise has been described as a fan sound or hearing a disc spinning.

Source of fan sound -- It is normal for the radio fan to run when the vehicle is turned on and for up to three minutes after the vehicle has been turned off and the driver's door has been opened or closed.

Disc spinning sound -- This is a normal operational sound. This is caused by the map disc spinning behind the tilt screen. It is a normal operation after the RKE is used to unlock the vehicle or when the driver's door has been opened. This noise will also be heard during vehicle operation and up to three minutes after the vehicle has been turned off and driver's door has been opened and closed.

Do not replace the radio as the described conditions are normal operating characteristics.

Attention: Proceed with this bulletin ONLY if the customer has commented about this concern AND the EI number is listed in GMVIS. If the customer has not commented about this condition or the EI does not show in GMVIS, disregard the bulletin and proceed with diagnostics found in published service information. THIS IS NOT A RECALL - refer to Service Bulletin 04-00-89-053A for more detail on the use of Engineering Information bulletins.

This bulletin is being revised to correct information under the Warranty Information section. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 08-08-61-001 (Section 08 -- Body and Accessories).

Condition

Important: If the customer did not comment about this condition, do not proceed with this bulletin.

Some customers may comment on a noise coming from the underbody of the vehicle.

Cause

GM Engineering is attempting to determine the root cause of this condition. GM has a need to obtain information about the diagnosis and repair. Use the following procedure to diagnose and repair the vehicle. Note the information on the repair order as necessary.

  1. Describe the noise (i.e. pop, creak, etc.) and the conditions in which the noise can be duplicated.
  2. Is the vehicle equipped with running boards -- If yes -- are they GM Accessory, or aftermarket? If a GM Accessory - proceed to step 3. If an aftermarket running board or the running board is mounted using the body mount bolt:

Remove the running boards and test drive the vehicle to determine if the concern has been corrected.

If the noise was eliminated or reduced, reinstall the running boards and proceed to step 4.

If the noise is still present, reinstall the running boards and proceed to step 3.

  3. If it is suspected that the noise is coming from a body mount, do the following steps:

3.1. Install the J 39570 - Chassis Ears to the frame rail at or near the body mounts.

3.2. Test drive the vehicle to identify which mount is suspect.

3.3. Measure the torque of the suspect mount(s).

3.4. Remove the suspect mount. Drive the vehicle and determine if the noise has been eliminated.

3.5. Inspect the body mount spacer/bracket on the body side. The body mount spacer/bracket on the body side should be flat. Note whether the metal is flat or if the mount appears to be "pulled through".

  4. Contact engineer Gary Banasiak at 586-492-8074 and provide him with diagnostic information.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may state that there is a pop or tick type noise from the left front dash area over bumps. The noise may occur when backing out of a parking spot or going over small speed bumps in parking lots. The noise is worse when the vehicle is cold and may go away when the vehicle gets hot outside.

If you experience this concern and have exhausted all resources, the concern may be caused by a loose spot weld that attaches the "L" bracket from the left inner fender panel to the front bulkhead (See Photo Below)

2023396.gif

(1) L Bracket without bolts.

Recommendation/Instructions:

To resolve the concern, add 3 bolts with nuts between the left fender bracket and the fender inner panel. This fender bracket is spot welded to the inner panel and attaches to the front-of-dash with 2 nuts (studs thru the dash panel). These 3 bolts/nuts were added through existing holes in the bracket and fender. ( See Photo Below )

(2) L Bracket with bolts.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

2007-2008 GMC Sierra

This PI was superseded to update Condition/Concern. Please discard PIP4020B.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may comment that their new body style full size pickup makes a groan, clunk or bump noise at parking lots speeds on launch or with light to medium braking. Braking to a complete stop can force the propshaft slip yoke forward into the transfer case while the vehicle rebounds slightly backwards after stopping its momentum and create this noise. This noise may also be due to fuel movement in the fuel tank when not completely full.

Note: This PI does not apply to the Silverado or Sierra classic versions.

Recommendation/Instructions:

Root cause may be the interface between the rear propshaft slip yoke and the transfer case or transmission output shaft splines or fuel movement in the fuel tank. To isolate if the concern is the slip yoke or fuel slosh and not a brake noise the dealer may attempt to duplicate while coasting with the transmission in neutral and braking to a stop. If a groan noise is gone while braking in neutral the noise is the slip yoke related. Dealers may lube the slip yoke splines with TransGel (J36850) to help reduce the noise.

If a clunk noise continues after completing the above, the noise has now been isolated to the fuel movement in the tank please make no repair attempts at this time as this noise is considered a operating characteristic.

A Field Product Report should be submitted - refer to the latest version of Corporate Bulletin Number 02-00-89-002F.

Lubricating the slip yoke may only be a temporary repair and at this time engineering is investigating this concern. Please do not replace any prop shaft or transfer case components at this time.

Note: This PI does not apply to the Silverado or Sierra classic versions.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

This PI was superseded to update the areas of concern. Please discard PIT4485.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may comment about a rattle/popping/snapping type noise from the center IP air deflectors when the blower is on. In most cases, the noise is from the left center air deflector. This condition may be due to the air flow door being loose and vibrating. If the thumb wheel, to close off the air flow, is slightly rotated the noise will be eliminated or reduced.

Recommendation/Instructions:

To correct this concern, remove the center air outlet deflectors. With the airflow door in the full open position, to allow air flow, install a piece of black foam tape (obtained locally) along the top and bottom of the deflector housing so it just touches the air flow door. The foam tape should be positioned on the side of the air flow door so it does not obstruct the door from closing. With the foam tape properly installed, the air flow door will slightly contact the foam tape when in the full open position, preventing the door from vibrating.

I cannot diagnose it for ya, but that is all the relevant information that I can find for your YMM, it should help with tracking down the noise, as for the antifreeze, you may want to get under the truck and look for any leaks or get near the firewall to see if there is any leaks. As for the defroster not blowing, I couldn't tell you anything on that. Take it in for some warranty work.
