Xm Radio Problem

I just purchased a 2008 GMC Acadia equipped with GM Delco/Bose audio system. Everything sounds great except for the XM Radio. There is a constant wine noise in which the pitch and intensity increase and decrease accordingly with engine RPM. The noise is barely noticeable when the engine is at idle, but it makes the XM unbearable to listen to in normal driving conditions. I called the dealership the day after I purchased the vehicle and they told me to bring it in and they would install a noise filter. About a week later, I took the vehicle into the dealership and demonstrated the problem to the service rep. The service rep called me later and said the radio works fine and that the noise I was hearing was caused by 'signal loss due to interferance of buidings or other objects blocking signal.' The service rep said there was no noise filter to install and the radio worked fine. I felt this was an insult to my intelligence. I didn't have time to argue with the service rep, so I drove it home and of course, the problem still existed. This is the 3rd car I have had with XM Radio. I am fully aware that XM radio is not crysal clear and signal loss does occur from time to time. However, I can tell a difference between 'siganl loss/interference noise' and noise caused by the alternator/poor grouding. I'm taking my Acadia to another dealership to see what can be done. Anyone else experience or hear of this problem? Is there an easy fix or solution?

I am assuming it is the factory installed radio. I occasionally have that particularly whine with my sirius radio. Either way it should be a grounding problem.

Thanks for the reply. Were you able to fix the poor ground? I'm trying to figure out exactly where the XM radio receiver is grounded.

I have this currently so I would imagine that my power ground is fine just my audio wire is causing the issue. I also do not really notice the whine when listening live but if I am listening to recorded mode I notice it.

Thanks, I'll look into the noise filter. And to answer your question, yes it is the factory installed radio. I just wasn't sure if those noise filters would hook up to a factory installed radio. Thanks again for the reply...

I have a 2007 Suburban LTZ with the EXACT same problem. Engine whine, especially noticeable on the XM band. The XM band is always lower in volume and tinny. I believe there is an internal Fm modulator which is the reason why XM sounds so bad.

 

Adding a Coastal Electronics GMX-320 lockpick has only aggrevated the problem. I am addiing an inline power filter. Hopefully this will fix the problem.

 

I am disgusted with the quality of the GM Denso NAV unit. (The GPS maps are very lame compared to the competition.) I listen to XM every day, so the bad sound quality is really dissapointing in a $50K+ truck.
