Light Theft

The local 6:00 news here had a national story on Tail light theft on pickup trucks.

The film footage showed a GMT900 truck & interviewed a guy who had his

tail lights stolen. It only takes two screws to undo them and the thieves

are selling them on e-bay. It seems to be a pretty lucrative business and we

all know how expensive they are to replace.

The guy said that after he replaced the lights he was going to get a lock kit

for his tailgate, then the thieves can't get to the two screws.

Now there is a good reason to get the lock kit for the tailgate. It is a do-it-yourself

project and not expensive.($40)

When I bought my truck, I thought the locking tailgate was kind of silly, as i don't keep anything that valuable in the bed. Guess i'll have to start locking it now.

Can you get the replacement w/ lock from the dealer?

Not completely secure, but would stall theft, change the Torq head screws with simple hex-headed screws. Most of these scum-bums have electric screwdrivers with torq bits, probably phillips and slotted. They would almost never have a socket with them, or pliers.

 

Although if you had changed the screws out, that's something that would piss them off and would take it out on the truck by scratching all down the side as they left it for another.

I'm glad all my vehicles are older...they're not targets anymore. Though I would think that most of you with new trucks probably financed them, and I thought most banks/finance companies require you to have full coverage on a financed vehicle...so your insurance covers theft, and as long as it's more than your deductable you're set.

not only are tail lights expensive but with a lock its hard to steal a tailgate

Your welcome! I knew I had seen a thread or two about people installing the locking kit for their tailgates. I'm not sure that I have ever had mine locked. But, I think I may start... "just in case."

Sounds like a good idea, but I would probably forget it was there, and fry myself taking my tails off.
