Alternator Swap

Recommended Posts

I was looking at getting a new alternator for the truck. The 105 amp sometimes has a hard time keeping voltage up for the truck. I was gonna add another 105 and have the dual alternators but the 145 is cheaper than another 105 and 145 would be good enough. But I was wondering if there is a difference between them and would it bolt up fine?

I can't answer for you, but if I were looking into doing it myself, I'd go down to the store and ask to see one of each. If they look and measure up to be identical, go for it, but something tells me they probably won't just bolt right in. Something should be different, or they wouldn't require one belt for one alternator, and another belt for the other.

Yes it will swap out fine, and I have one to sell. Brand New.

You can also change the pulley, to give better idle output.

How much do you want for it Michael? And what of this pulley?

EDIT: Sorry misspelled your name.

Hold up before you do anything !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please note that the 140-160 amp alt. units are physically BIGGER

than the 85-105 units.................

Note that IF your new unit is bigger you MAY need to swap out the brackets

with brackets from a VYU equipped truck (which come with the bigger

alts.)

Is the 105 Amp from a Dmax and the 145 Amp from the 6.0L?

EDIT: BTW nice foot in the picture. Dirty flip flop wearing hippie. j/j

Nice pic huh? Actually i got the pic from a rice truck forum where

the rice boyz are swapping a 85? amp (with external rectifier?)

Delco unit with a 140 unit on a rice truck!

It was the only pic I could find with them side by side.

I ran into the size difference issue before trying to put a 140 on

my 90 GMC 1/2 ton w/350.

So instead of swapping pullies or brackets I found a local alt. shop

that beefed up the stock 85? amp. unit to pump out 150 or so

for snowplowing duty.........................

Its best to measure the units side by side beforehand...................

Well I'm just not sure. Mine seems to be just as big as the one on the left but like ya said do a comparison first. I just don't have one to compare to yet.

You are comparing apples and oranges. The alternators of 20 years ago are not what we are talking about. The 105, and 145 in todays vehicles, mount exactly the same, with no changes. I swapped dual 105's to dual 145's. It took 15 minutes.

Ok, so the one you are wanting to sell is a 105 or a 145? And how much do you want for it?

I changed the alternator on my '01 6.0L to a 145A unit. The alterantor was larger, but all the mounting points were the same. The only problem I had was that I needed a longer belt. I went to the parts store and asked for a belt for a truck with the 145A alternator. If I remember correctly, I had to tell them it was an '03, since the 145A alt wasn't available in '01.

That was it, swap the alternators and install a new belt.

As a side note ...

on my 5.3 the huge alternator mounting bracket needs to be changed and of course the s-belt when upgrading to the hi-output unit.

Well guys....I guess you will have to type slower and be more literal because

Killerbee either can't READ or COMPREHEND whats being posted here.

Hes sniveling about apples and oranges and something about 20 years ago!

I guess we need to put disclaimers and capital letters in our posts for

him to understand that what MAY be a simple bolt in SWAP for SOME

people on a larger alternator swap WILL NOT be as simple on OTHER

peoples vehicles or situations and that modifications MAY or may NOT

be required as SOME of you have discovered............................

OH ! thats RIGHT!.....hes ONLY here to SELL his OLD alternator and not

to HELP so hes being PISSY about it......................
