Wrote about this a while back and was referred to a service bulletin. GM dealer said bulletin covered erratic needle behaviour, not total loss. Event started during cold weather, but went away as it warmed up. Now have lost all functions. Illumination lights work and check eng symbol lights when key set to run,but nothing else. Scanned for codes but none found. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

A recently sent letter to me from GM:

"As a owner of a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, your satisfaction with

our product is very imporant to us.

This letter is intended to make you aware that your vehicle could develop

a condition where one or more of the instrument panel gauge needles may

stick, flutter, or become inoperative. This may cause inaccurate readings,

including the speedometer and fuel gauge.

Do not take your vehicle to your GM dealer as a result of this letter unless

you believe that your vehicle has this condition.

What We Have Done: General Motors is providing owners with a special coverage

that extends the warranty on the instrument panel cluster for the condition described

above. If this condition occurs on your 2004 model year Chevrolet Silverado within 7

years of the date your vehicle was originally placed in service or 70,000 miles, whichever

occurs first, the condition will be repaired for you at no charge.

What You Should Do: Repairs and adjustments qualifying under this special coverage

must be preformed by a General Motors dealer. If you believe your vehicle has this

condition, contact your Chevrolet dealer to schedule an appointment at a time that is

convenient for you. Your dealer will inspect the vehicle and if the condition is found,

your dealer will replace the instrument panel cluster.

When calling your dealer, please have your 17 character vehicle identification number

(VIN) handy so your dealer can ensure the cluster will be available on your appointment

date, if needed. Your dealer will also need the mileage on your vehicle. Keep this letter

with your other important glove box literature for future reference.

Reimbursement: The enclosed form explains what reimbursement is available and how

to request reimbursement if you have paid for repairs for the special coverage condition.

If you have any questions or need any assistance, just contact your dealer or the

Chevrolet Customer Assistance Center between the hours of 8:00 AM and 11:00 PM,

EST, Monday through Friday. They can be reached at 1-800-630-2438 (TTY 1-800-833-2438)"

I was the second owner of my 2004 Silverado & yes the dealer fixed it (replaced it)

at no cost to me. I recieved this letter after they fixed my truck! I then sold the truck.

I just reread your post JMHO112, Yes my

"instrument panel cluster" was indeed

dead!

When I went to dealer, they gave me the usual spiel " we can check it out for a fee. If it is covered we will reimburse you". I guess I have to chance they dont screw me.

An aside to this, is there a GM telephone number or website one can contact to make them aware of my problem?

You may have to fight to get them to honor this repair. I had no

problem with this issue, but they would NOT touch my rear breaks

(under the factory bumper to bumper warranty), on my truck, that

only had 18,000 miles and the rear pads were completely gone, the

front looked as new. I've come to find out the rear disc's on many of

the trucks did this, hence the return to the drum breakes on the new

trucks.........this made me so mad I sold the truck! GM dose NOT honor

it's warranty as far as I'm concerned.
