4x4 Locking Up

I have a 97 Chevy K1500 5.7 and the 4x4 isn't exactly working correctly. A few years back it was perfectly fine, but now it is messed up. At first, half the time it wouldn't engage, or would engage a couple of seconds later with a loud BING noise. Now it seems fine, i guess it's because it hasn't been used for a while. Now here comes my new problem. If I'm at a complete stop or going slow and turn the wheel half way/all the way left or right and hit the gas, all you hear is the tires skidding. I believe its the back tires. I'm not too sure if this is normal. At one point when that happened, it felt like the steering wheel was locking up along with it. Any suggestions? Or is this usually normal? This is my first 4x4 truck...

On dry pavement that's normal and not really recommended...It's basically your driveline binding up as all 4 wheels are trying to turn at the same rate which is causing the front and rear tires to lock up...It wears down your transfer case and other 4x4 components.

aha! Thanks!! Good thing it wasn't breaking! I've already had my share of fixing the truck. I'll play around with it on a dirt road next time I get a chance, thanks!
