Performance Ignition

I have a new body style gmc truck with a flex 5.3l and I was trying to find some ignition coils for it that would work, msd style or an equivalent since I can't put a box on it. I emailed the msd tech guys and gave them the part numbers for the square and round

coils that are on these motors and they don't have any parts that will match up, I was wondering if any of you guys have heard of somehow adapting the ones for the ls2. The whole reason I am asking is because I'm trying to get some more bottom end out of it and I know how much the ignition control boxes help with that. Or if you guys have found anything else that has worked for you

You're not going to see any gain from putting hotter ignition coils on an LSX motor. The stock units are very good, and the wires are only 6 inches long. There is more than enough spark there for anything but extreme modifications. put the money toward a tune. You will get way more out of that for the money.

Forgot the other part:

Hotter spark is only part of what MSD ignition boxes for older engines do, the other part (generally the bigger performance gain) is controlling the timing, and that's handled by the custom tune.

Also remember that a hotter spark could cause premature plug erosion. Especially if the plugs are precious metal.

You say more bottom end grunt...what gears are you running?

*You wont see any significant benefits from running a MSD setup, save the grand and find something else, ie. tune.

I have an edge tuner and at times I can mash the gas and blast the tires off it with my 3.73s but other times it feels like I'm loosing timing or something, it shifts firm and doesn't fall on its face but would a custom tune be better, I have a connection with a guy from volant that is trying to put together a gm warranty approved tune, and he says he can make me a pretty nasty setup and I'm planning on putting on a off-road y-pipe, so loading the cats isn't an issue for me and I'm not trying to stay warranty friendly anyway, quite frankly I work at the dealer and I would still rather fix it myself

maybe I will quit being a wimp a just pony up the cash for the dynatech headers

uh...why? Again, you're not going to see much of an improvement with that. Just get a custom tune. You'll be amazed at the difference with just the tune.

No offense, but you're all over the place with what you are or aren't going to do, and might not be real familiar with what's most effective for different applications on an LSX engine. It sounds like the best thing you could do right now is spend a fair amount of time with the search button on this site researching all the different stuff other folks have already done. There's a wealth of information on the site covering just about everything about these trucks and most of it is easily found with the search.

PS. There is no such thing as a "GM warranty approved tune". If you have a failure of some sort and it's traced back to the tune, you will not be covered under warranty, no matter what the aftermarket tuner says. But then, that doesn't matter since you said you don't care about warranty.

Well when I bought it I was deciding whether or not to buy a 72 el camino that ended up being a heap, I had a 77 d100 p/u for a daily driver, I wanted stable transportation and i work at the dealer I bought it at as an advisor so I can get some stuff past the warranty that other people don't as long as I don't get an inspector. And I'm 19 years old, of course I want fast more than any thing else. I blew my cats with my tuner so nows the time to get the headers I guess.

I was looking for the bottom end power of a multiple spark, long duration ignition setup which normally is from a box but thats what the coils are supposed to do not just bump the voltage, and as for the tune, I think i will get one, makes me wish I didn't pay $400 for the edge but I guess it makes a good monitor. This guy I will probly go through has put together some sweet tunes from mild 87 octane to a serious setup. which I wouldn't mind doing as long as I didn't have cats to clog. I've just had bad experiences with any tuning in the past but I guess its all about quality.
